When jukeboxes were widely used they contained records with the current hits by different artists, songwriters and record labels, like a top 40. Has there ever been made a real jukebox musical?

Or you could be even more flexible than the jukebox. First you creat a fantastic story that fits the musical format. Then you freely pick songs that create the right emotions for each scene. Obviously im aware of the possible legal and economic problems with such a process.
Yes- it's called the radio

Well obviously the tunes would be within a framework and lyrics would be changed to fit the story. If you would be listening to pieces from the same musical on the radio, but which would be arranged in the wrong order, it wouldn't make sense either.

The 60's project is more along the lines of what you are talking about. It uses tons and tons of songs and sections of songs from all artists from the 60s...It was a bit tiresome and clunky when I saw it. Some great performers in the cast. Some great moments, and lots of great singing. But I know they have been working on the book. Maybe it will improve. It is more along the lines of what you are talking about.
Moulin Rouge sort of did that...

The Steve Martin/Bernsadette Peters movie PENNIES FROM HEAVEN (and the BBC mini-series on which it was based) had an original sory, and used songs fromt he 1930's. In fact, the actors didn't actually sing - they lip synched to the original recordings from the period - soi I guess that would really be a "jukebox musical".
Best scene: Christopher Walken doing a tap dance/strip tease to "Let's Misbeahve".

I saw a reading of a show still being written about back-up singers and their individual stories- how they fell in love with music, etc- but i cant remember the name of it.
update: it was called A Hot Minute.

Jerome Robbins' Broadway? It was a jukebox of songs from several projects he did.
DO RE MI
had all original songs but it was about how jukeboxes took ove the industry
so it was a "Jukebox" musical.
Footloose issnt like that as the famous songs it uses are all from the film version of Footloose and the rest of the songs were written for the show.
We had a popular show in the UK called Oh What A Night and that used songs from the 70s by all different artists.
Also Boogie Nights the musical(no not the film)and Love Shack.
they were talking about a recent one on "On Stage" with i think 60's music off broadway, but i dont remember the name
Is the new SHOUT the off-Broadway musical a jukebox musical?
thats what I was talking about, thanks
