What are they like as people?
What were they like when you met them?

Haven't met Sondheim, but have written to him many times.
His kindness and openness to answer all of my questions, comments, etc is truly remakable.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Yes, both.
ALW was very shy and almost scared. Sondheim was quite affable- funny, accessible.

Posted: 9/23/04 at 12:07amI met ALW this April when I was in LA. I was having lunch at THE IVEY, and he sat at a table next to me. I made small talk with him, and he was pleasent enough. I just think that he is extremely shy, and his lady-friend he was with was much more talkative and friendly.

Posted: 9/23/04 at 12:29amI sang with the NYC Gay Men's Chorus and many years ago we did a SOndheim concert and had the opportunity to meet him and spend a good deal of time with him...a great and humble man -- unfazed by his talent and genious....

Posted: 9/23/04 at 12:37amI've met him the past two years at the Sonheim Celebration in Highland Park at Ravinia Festival and I was a blubbering little chorus boy when we talked. He was quite shy at first, but he opened up when he saw I knew my sh*t. I gave him a letter I pre-wrote (because I knew he'd be there) and responded promptly (his letter was TYPED from a TYPEWRITER ::drools:: and on his personal letterhead). Such a classy guy, my icon is!

Posted: 9/23/04 at 6:01amDo you remember when the two did a musical tribute for Cameron Mackintosh and both played the piano and sang together? Stephen played the melody of SEND IN THE CLOWNS and Andrew played the melody of MUSIC OF THE NIGHT and they both changed the lyrics to fit the Mackintosh tribute. I think it is featured on the "Hey Mr. Producer" DVD/video.

The closest I ever got to meeting Sondheim was sitting in the front row of the audience when he appeared with Susan Stroman at the FROGS lecture. I have to admit, after hearing aboult how shlubby he supposedly is, my first thought was "Gee.. He cleans up nice." Of course, he was delightful and very smart.
A few weeks later, I was walking with my sorta-partner Barry and some friends through Lincoln Center one evening, and Barry was going on (as he often does) about how New York City is the greatest city in the world and how wonderful it is to live here. Like clockwork, Sondheim passed us, deep in thought. After he was out of earshot,
Barry turned to us and said, "See what I mean?!"
