I was thinking about Sharon Brown lately as I looked through my Jekyll and Hyde Program book and rememered how remarkable she was as Lucy Harris. How she belted the crap outta all the songs and added her own unique touch to each of them
she's been in
Dreamgirls
The Wiz
Joseph...
Jekyll and Hyde
Rent
and more
has anyone seen her perform
what can you say about her performances...?
Or is there anything you'd like to see her in??

Well, saw her in the A CHORUS LINE movie...
And saw her as Lucy in J&H...a very uneven accent with some rather stiff acting, but an incredibly powerful voice. Also a very nice lady.

Posted: 11/4/03 at 5:18pmYes i understand her inconsistent accent in J/H but man, her voice, wow, she nearly blew the roof off! and I remember one of my friends saying how she sang some parts even better than Linda Eder!!

Posted: 11/4/03 at 5:20pmGotta agree with Kev on Brown's Lucy (J&H). She 'shore' can belt...but she turned each song into a solo concert. The accent was way off. But she's very attractive! Heard she was good in Dreamgirls. Don't know much more about her.

Posted: 11/4/03 at 5:26pmI saw Sharon for the first time in the early 80's as the Narrator in Joseph...Dreamcoat. She replaced Laurie Beechman. She has such a magnificent voice. I still have the Playbill that she signed for me. Saw her a few years after that in the revival of "Dreamgirls". I just can't believe she hasn't been on Broadway in ages. She would have made a great Grizabella in "Cats".

How was her Narrator? Did she sing it like Laurie on the cd (Full on belt with awesome harmonies?) or was she able to make it her own?
I bet "Letting out a mighty roar" was totally awe-inducing!

Posted: 11/4/03 at 5:34pmSorry Robactor, I don't remember. I was disappointed that Laurie was no longer with the show, but Sharon more than made up for it. I have to check my Playbill, but that revival was almost 20 years ago (I know, now I'm dating myself)!!! I just remember her voice and I actually liked her better in Joseph than I did in Dreamgirls.

Posted: 11/4/03 at 5:39pmI even think they padded her as Effie. I liked her, "I am Changing", but her "And I'm Telling You" wasn't as powerful as other Effie's. That's not to say that she wasn't good. I have always been a fan of hers, and sorry I didn't get to see her in J&H on tour.

Posted: 11/4/03 at 7:32pmi keep expecting to see her as one of the central trio in MAMMA MIA. It's that kind of voice to me, always has been. Very enjoyable!

Posted: 11/4/03 at 11:50pmI saw Sharon Brown in the first tour of JOSEPH and in the DREAMGIRLS tour. She made a wonderful narrator. I don't recall her being as "belty" as Beechman. She was a good Effie. They only padded her for the sequences in which she was supposed to be pregnant.
