I couldn't find another thread on this. Please tell me if there is one.

I just saw the movie and I'm not so sure how I felt about it. I loved the cast but I don't recall anything really special that made me love it either though. It ended in such a weird place. You didn't even get to see the quartet perform or the marriage...

It's like the movie that could've been. There were some really good parts though.

I suppose that's how the play was written too so, idk, am I being stupid or could it have more?

It was a long time ago, but as I remember, a change in the dynamic reveals a lot of cracks in the relationships in a long standing quartet. In the end, they seem to decide they need each other, and the music they make together, beyond their individual differences.

I loved it and have seen it several times. One of my favorite Maggie Smith performances of all time.

I thought it was a massive disappointment, not helped by false advertising making it look more like a comedy/drama when in actual fact there was very little comedy in it and it's a bit of a downer. No where near as strong as Marigold Hotel or even Song For Marion

I thought Quartet was terrific. It certainly earned a spot on my top ten film list that year. Of course, that's not so hard to do any more, movies being what they are. This is one of the very few films I have attended where the audience sat through the closing credit sequence (I loved the then and now shots) and applauded at the conclusion.

As far as Maggie Smith needs a new hip and the NHS is taking its time getting her one movies go, The Best Exotic Margiold Hotel is better.

I saw it on tv, wasn't expecting much but found it to be a modestly enjoyable movie. Nothing more, nothing less.

Theatermom2, are you maybe talking about "Late Quartet," with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener, rather than "Quartet," with Maggie Smith and Tom Courtenay?
