Had the privilege of seeing this @ the TO Film Fest. Genuine enjoyment. Don't quibble about the historical inaccuracies- It's clever & funny -a companion piece to Shakespeare in Love. Billy Crudup is a revelation as Kyneston- the last man to play a woman on the English stage. His speech about achieving beauty from playing a woman is heartbreaking. Claire Danes is more fuzzy in her role as his dresser & later replacement but still good & this is Rupert Everet as u have never seen him!!
Some people will snarl & gripe about the "gay conversion" & it is the least developed aspect of the film but 1- It is apparently historically true & 2- its necc for the films romantic plot. Frankly, the questions about "identity" it raises are not specifically sexual or even artistic but human- even if it does not come up w an explaination- the exploration is enough.

this is one of the best plays I've ever seen, I can't wait to see the movie. The production at the Old Globe in 2002 was so fantastically well-done, no one I was with even mentioned the large amount of nudity. I wish I could remember the lead actor's name. Tom Hewitt was in it as the King.

OK, I'm confused. I just watched the preview and the voiceover said "Billy Crudup" pronouncing it "crud-up". I just checked online and found two different articles that said it's "crew-dup".

maybe it's "crew-dup" in Canada. both articles appear to be canadian.
