Am I the only one that thinks they're really underplaying the comedy in that scene? There's barely any smoke or explosion sfx? So much wasted potential for fun!

I don't know. They are heating up cans of tomatos with candles until they explode from the heat pressure. I'm not sure there would be that big a boom and explosion with smoke to follow. I feel that moment plays fine. It's the rest of the scene that seems to lack the zippy humor that the rest of the show has. I remember that I laughed a lot more during the 97 tour and a regional production of "It Takes a Woman" than I did in this version.
