I just saw Hello Dolly again with Bernadette Peters, who of course is fabulous, but I have a variety of weird observations and wonderings about the show. the show seems to be 2:40 run time now, and I thought they had it down to about 2:35 with bette. it started out at about 2:45 at the beginning of previews, but they did a good job of shaving some of that time off as the show went along and seemed to have it down to 2:35.
Peters does sing a bit more up tempo that Midler, so I would think this would speed things up. But Victor Garber seems to sing at a slower pace than David Hyde Pierce, so I would think this would even things out. Of course Horace doesn't have as many songs. And it seems like Gaven Creel sings a little faster now, though he's still marvelous and in reality is the best part of this show, not Midler or Donna Murphy or anyone else, Creel is still the biggest star in this show in my opinion.
Or is it just my imagination with all this run time examination? Peters was getting some super long applause, so this does slow things down a little Also, a big shoutout to Ryan Worsing, who did a super job as Barnaby

I'm sorry for the error. Ryan Worsing was on as Ambrose, not Barnaby.
Stemp was super as Barnaby Tucker
Bernadette was delivering all her monologues terribly slow on Saturday, and I did notice afterwards the show ran longer than the past times I've seen it. Her pace reminded me of Taye Diggs in Hedwig - he was obviously in character and there, but was very concerned about not forgetting lines.

Bernadette always speaks with a slower meter of voice.
She does. But god the final monologue could probably use some speeding up haha.
As much as I loved Bette, my biggest problem with her performance is that she raced like crazy through all the spoken dialogue she had, which also may account for the shorter run time. Bernadette was the exact opposite. In some cases it was almost too slow. Perhaps she's still trying to get all her lines down. Regardless, still loved both of them in the role.

Though it may seem as such, I doubt the tempi of the songs is different. The orchestra plays to a click track.

No it doesn’t .
I didn't notice Bernadette pacing herself too much until her final monologue in Vandergelder's before Horace tells her he's having the room redone in blue. She took 40 full years to get through that last chunk.
I also noticed a longer run time at the performance I was at with Bernadette as Dolly. Bernadette seemed very unsure of herself during some pivotal scenes - especially the monologues which she delivered very slowly. While Bette talked very fast during some scenes, her delivery of the monologues was flawless and had perfect timing.

Not a single Dolly in the history of this show spoke slower than my beloved Carol Channing.
