KEEPING BROADWAY ON THE RECORD
www.stagespace.com
For decades, almost every Broadway musical has left behind a permanent
legacy - the Original Cast Recording.
For many theater lovers, cast recordings have been the bridge to
Broadway, giving the listener a glimpse of a first class production,
no matter what the actual distance to New York. And although shows
open and close, the cast recordings have remained, documenting the
evolving history of musical theater and inspiring new generations of
theater lovers across the world.
But Original Cast Recordings are on the verge of extinction. More and
more record executives consider cast recordings a waste of time and
money, and have made it clear that the days of recording Broadway
shows are numbered. Robert Hurwitz, president of Nonesuch Records,
told a journalist in March 2004 that he will now be recording only two
musical theater composers - Stephen Sondheim and Adam Guettel.

We cannot let the cast album die. This petition is being sent to the
chief executives of Sony, RCA Victor, Nonesuch, Atlantic and Hollywood
Records, demanding that Broadway cast albums be allowed to survive,
for the sake of the industry itself.

I signed... dont know what these petitions do, if anything, but I signed anyway lol
I think this is disgusting. If this is going to happen, than I don't want to hear any kind of bitching and moaning when people take it upon themselves to preserve these shows.

OMG my heart would stop if the cast recordings stop
Cast recordings shouldn't be on major labels, sorry. They're too expensive and the overhead on a major label is much higher than on a small, independent label.
They should keep making cast albums -- and keep putting them out on smaller labels who can turn a profit on a smaller sales figure.

"But Original Cast Recordings are on the verge of extinction."
Name me 3 current Broadway show that have run over 3 months that have not been recorded.
Extinction? Don't over react. Even "The Frogs" is being recorded.
I can see them being made cheaper and on smaller labels but not extinct at all. Well said aslo Matt. If thery don't make a recording, I will!
This makes me want to cry.
