My high school did Tommy awhile back. That was certainly not traditional for a high school! Everyone loved it.

I was recently involved in a production of "Hair" where the cast was all high schoolers. It was a huge challenge but turned out very well! Definitely a musical about social issues and a very non-traditional choice to consider.

I saw The Spitfire Grill a few years ago, and even though it could have been better in areas, it's music is beautiful, and the story is pretty good as well.
