Well, the time is fast approaching when I move back to the west coast. I've had many opportunities of watching great theatre this past year, and hope that the last few shows I watch are equally as wonderful.
I already have tickets to the following:
- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
- Passion
- The Trip to Bountiful
- Pippin
Any suggestions/insight to help me narrow down my choices to TWO of the following??
- Orphans
- Lucky Guy
- The Testament of Mary
- The Assembled Parties
- Macbeth (not a big Shakespeare fan, but might be worth it to the performance...dunno)
Thanks very much!
But we don't know anything about you. How can we help, unless we shill you a show we might be involved with? We don't know what types of shows you like, what you can't stand, etc? I must say that the list of shows you have already bought tickets for sounds a lot more fun and interesting than anything on your maybe list. Have you thought about Matilda? I'm not really interested in paying $150 a ticket for that but almost everyone on here seems to be loving it.
Lucky Guy is so-so but it's cool to see Tom Hanks on stage. Not really a must-see performance or show, though.
This is merely a hunch, but I don't think Orphans will be worth the time/money.
Testament of Mary has potential, but it's a one-woman show. Usually with a one-person play, you risk seeing a (hopefully) incredible performance, but it's usually in a bland play (ie ANN). The same goes for MACBETH, with the difference being that the production already exists and has excellent word-of-mouth.
The Assembled Parties might be worth it. Depends if the play is good.
Outside of your list, what about MATILDA, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER, or THE NANCE?

I watched Peter and the Starcatcher...liked it a lot.
Don't really have an interest in The Nance. Is there a lot of buzz for it?
Can't stand the sound of singing children...hence no Matilda my list. :/
I forgot about The Nance. Good suggestion. But again, how can we recommend shows to someone when we know nothing about their taste? This applies to all "help me pick a show" posts. I don't get the logic of asking strangers to help pick a show, especially ones that have not yet opened and not yet been seen. Does he like one man shows? Who knows? Will he like The Nance? Not if he's a Christian conservative tea party member. Will he like Lucky Guy? Maybe if he likes Hanks and Ephron, and bio plays. Otherwise, maybe not. Give the board some info and the experts on here (of which I am not one) will probably give you really great suggestions.

Let's see...I tend to equally enjoy plays and musicals. Famous actors are usually a plus, but will not want to sit through a boring/tedious/uneventful play...didn't particularly enjoy Clybourne Park or The Anarchist (like 99.9% of the population). Plays I most enjoyed: Death of a Salesman (2012 revival), The Other Place, Golden Boy. Musicals I most enjoyed: Mystery of Edwin Drood (wouldn't have watched this without the enthusiasm from this board) and Book of Mormon. I suppose I MOST want to see a great performance (e.g., Laurie Metcalf in The Other Place, Boyd Gaines in An Enemy of the People, Rob McClure in Chaplin).
Then make MACBETH your #1 choice.
I agree with Hook! PS- sorry to hear you are leaving us for the West Coast. We need theatre lovers like you here....but I guess they have something resembling theatre on the West Coast as well. Come back soon.
