Help with 54 Below tickets as holiday gift

Hi.

My nephew is a huge musical/Broadway fan and I'm taking him to New York in January to see some shows. It will be his first time out of Galveston, Texas and his parents who won't travel are paying his half. So I want to get him a holiday gift and have settled on tickets to a show at 54 Below which I've never been to and only discovered snooping through nephew's cd collection looking for ideas.

I want to book the Tony Winter WarmUp show on 1/8. The remaining options are main dining room or side view. How is side view here? Is it very obscured?

Also the show starts at 6. Doors at 5:15. Do you suggest eating dinner here or just doing drinks and grabbing dinner afterwards. The menu looks good but I'm having a hard time imagining trying to eat and enjoy the show and the tables look small and very close. Maybe I'm way off base and the food is as recommended as the entertainment.

Would appreciate any input.

I've never done side view seating. However, it is right next to the stage on the sides. If seeing versus just listening is important, spend the extra money for main dining room.

I think the food is good. If you get there early enough, eating and enjoying the show should be a non issue unless you eat really slowly. I find it to a really relaxing environment, so I personally wouldn't want to make reservations elsewhere.

The Bar Rail is an excellent place to see a show from, if you can get 2 seats. It's elevated and you don't have the problem of servers constantly walking in front of you as in the main dining room.

Is it a sign of my ultra-geeky-side that I recognize the OP's name as the snooty author from the "Dorothy's New Friend" episode of Golden Girls? I love it!

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the bar rail only has 1 seat left. VIP tables and premium are also sold out or unavailable. Main dining is further back and side view is right by the stage but it looks like a very small room so probably does not matter.

Ado Annie- good catch!

It is a pretty small room but not really cramped, if that makes sense. I love the place

Excellent choice for a gift!. I agree with Marianne. Every time I have gone I was able to eat dinner before the show began.

It's a very intimate venue and the rear tables are elevated so you should have no problems enjoying the show. Food service was prompt last time I was there.
