I was reading an article from Playbill.com written in 2002 that talks about a musical called Hoopz by Jeanine Tesori about The Harlem Globetrotters, and a musical of Pinocchio both to be directed by Julie Taymor.

Has anybody heard news from either of these?

I saw the first "Hoopz" workshop with Savion Glover. Now while Savion's work was AMAZING and quite honestly had potential of being a huge hit, the show itself was a mess. The director (now pretty well known) Kenny Leon did a horrible job. The show is about the Harlem Globetrotters. Disney had actual Globe Trotters teaching a mix of basketball players and dancers very complex movements combined with Savion's tap. I'm not sure anything as complicated has ever been concocted for a Broadway show. It took what the Globetrotters normally do to an entirely different level. I think if there would have been no story and just stunts, it would work as a just a dance show.

The music and dialogue was a lot like a Def Poetry Jam. Definitely something like STOMP that could play forever. Disney fired the entire creative team and hired Tessori, I think she got side-tracked on animated stuff.

Not sure about Pinocchio, though I doubt very much it is still in the works. Disney has its hands full with the current mess that is Tarzan.
