It's hardly a trend. The art forms always borrow from one another. So this has actually been going on for some time, especially, movies coming to Broadway.
Can't comment too much on the horror aspect though. It has been failing though...

Posted: 8/24/04 at 3:06pmThis isn't a new thing; there have been plenty of musicals based on movies before. Trends come and trends go- I actually think next season is the Season of the Jukebox Musical. I also think that trend is going to end quite soon. *evil cackle*

Posted: 8/24/04 at 3:06pmYes, I totally agree, but I just love how Broadway always goes into phases, such as The French Revolution, and this seems to be, even though it has been around for a while, it seems that there are a mass of them coming out. Updated On: 8/24/04 at 03:06 PM

Posted: 8/24/04 at 3:22pmDon't forget "We will rock you" - I think it's on it's way too is'nt it? Then we can look forward to "Jerry Springer". I can imagine what's after that - maybe "Fear Factor - The musical" or how about "The Batchelor?" HHHMMMMM...Endless possibilities.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:09pmI wish that creators would make some more original things.. a musical NOT based on a book, movie, or anything else in time.. just a musical thought up with pure imagination.

Since when is Lord of the Rings coming to Broadway?
And neither can I imagine Spider-Man on Broadway. Ugh.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:15pmhey, i wish they would go to other sources for material as well, but using a known title or story is a commercial insurance policy of sorts. shows are so risky and expensive to produce, so the backers often think that a success in one medium will equal success in another. this is just a phase i think....like star vehicles in the 40s and 50s, rock musicals in the 60s, concept musicals in the 70s, blockbusters in the 80s...

Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:17pmThe last time something "original" happened was Contact, I believe... But even that found its inspiration elsewhere. "The Swing" was influenced by a painting.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:28pmIsn't Avenue Q, Caroline, or change, and Rent original...even though they started off broadway.

Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:28pmSpider-man is a VERY good story for the stage - lots of drama. Didn't you see the movies?? The only problem I would imagine in a musical would be too many fight sequences.

I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan, but I'm dreading the musical version.
By the way, the Lord of the Rings musical will be based on the book, not the movie. The movie's creative team have absolutely nothing to do with it (which is another reason why this scares me - you need people who care about and understand the material).

Posted: 8/24/04 at 6:31pmSpiderman would make a weird musical...although Superman made it to the stage in the 60's and in my opinion the music, plot and special effects were really cool. I have the cd, I love the music. Patrick Cassidy was in it. If it didnt come out around the Batman hype it probably would have ran more than 5 months.

Rent is a modern retelling of the opera, La Boheme...
but I will stand corrected for not mentioning the previous season's original material with Avenue Q and Caroline or Change
