Celebrating a nine-month run is Sally Lambert’s Grapefruit, directed by Theresa Gambacorta and performed by Cheryl King. Sundays, July 29, August 5, 12, 19, 26 at 5:00 pm
Extended for a second time, now through August, Stabilized Not Controlled continues to entertain audiences of all types with its edgy comedy and all-too-familiar New York story: the landlord/tenant battle that seems to rage at every doorstep on the isle of Manhattan. From a septuagenarian sex addict in recovery and her murderous landlord, to a crowded subway car, playwright and performer Frank Blocker shows us the characters of the City who don’t back down from a fight.
Forbidden Kiss LIVE – Now in its Sixth Year!
August 10 at 8:00 pm
Forbidden Kiss LIVE, the sexy and saucy variety show reminiscent of Saturday Night Live has built a powerful company of performers and writers as it’s enjoyed a long run of monthly shows that often sell out. Company members include Bella da Balls and her burlesque-o-rama of characters, chanteuse and spoken word artist DeeAnne Gorman, musical comedienne Gaby Gold, mime and movement mistress Parker Leventer, writer/actress Valerie Hager, and singer Greg Allen, performing comedy sketches, songs, monologues, spoken word and improvisation. This month, have your deepest darkest questions ready for The Sexperts. Producer and company member Cheryl King premieres new vaudeville sketches in the continuing series Naughty Nurse Elza, featuring Elza herself along with actor/storyteller TC Corwin. Special guest performer will be burlesque performer Matt Knife, performing his hilariously provocative “Propaganda.”
Frank Women – Special Guest Star Performances!
August 17 & 18 at 7:30 pm
Producer Cheryl King and E-Merging Writers will present two special evenings of more than a dozen actresses taking on playwright Frank Blocker’s characters in Frank Women. The limited engagement will feature out-of-town guests Chericia Curtis of Texas, Lisa Hamilton (currently on tour in solo show Bald), and former “Bud Girl” Tam Paquette, each premiering new work. Joining them will be company members from Stage Left’s Forbidden Kiss LIVE: Gaby Gold, King, Jenn Wehrung, Elza Zagreda (Dating, Depression and Dirtbags) and show regular Valerie Hager. Seasoned character actresses Amy Heath Bell, Sandra Keay, Theresa Gambacorta, Stefani Miller and Nomi Tichman will be anchoring the show as they delve through the female personas in Blocker’s work. Producer wunderkind Jeremy Neal will be the male interloper of the night, stepping in to complete the cast of one-page play Sandbag that starts the evening. Works will include selections from Blocker’s established plays as well as several new monologues and performance pieces.
Stage Left Studio has recently offered its own competitive discount called the 99 Club, which is 9 tickets for $99 dollars that can be used over a 9-month period. The tickets can be used in any combination with any number of audience members, but the ticket holder must be present at each event attended. Stage Left Studio is located one block south of Penn Station, 214 W. 30th Street, 6th floor.
Three plays have announced returns to Stage Left Studio in the fall. That Play: A Solo Macbeth, a retelling of That Scottish Tale from one man’s perspective by Tom Gualtieri and Heather HIll, will return for performances throughout November. Jay Alvarez returns in his long-running, award-winning Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You. Alvarez’ play has conquered the Hollywood Fringe Festival, pocketed a New York International Fringe Festival award and more raves in his Washington, D.C. run, and has been running for more than a year. Alvarez’ story traces his family’s decision to escape Cuba by boat when he was a child. Finally, the festival favorite and criticially acclaimed Home In Her Heart by Margaret Morisson, featuring Erika Hart and directed by Cheryl King, will also return for performances in September.
