I have not seen TL5Y on stage - but I would kill to get to see it. I play the CD all the time - and I agree with Jake that it is totally uplifting - full of wonderful melodies, stunning lyrics and profound insights into life and love. Also, each song is so different - it is not repetitive at all.

I like and admire the score in its entirity but particularly I love the wit of "Summer In Ohio", the heartbreaking emotion of "Still Hurting", the simplistic beauty of "Nobody Needs To Know". And "The Next Ten Minutes" is a work of sheer genius. Jason Robert Brown is one of the few people today who is writing songs that represent what musical theater ought to be about.

The lyrics are not self-involved - they develop character and plot, which is what musical theater lyrics are supposed to do. Musical theater is a dranatic art form and the songs are an extension of the dialogue. Thank God for someone who writes the kind of songs whose structure and form is dicatated by their dramatic needs rather than simply trying to be audience friendly in a pop-song format as in some other shows. Brown ranks right up there with William Finn and Stephen Sondheim as one of the great composer/lyricists of the modern era. And I believe his works, which do not aim at the "quick fix" of mass popularity, will survive long after all of us have gone.
