First off let me say this. Words cannot express how much I love Augest:Osage County. That being said I am glad that it is moving next door to the Music Box and continuing its broadway run. My only question and concern is this.

Now that it is switching over from a limited engagment to an open run. How long do you think it will be able to run as an open ended run rather then a limited engagment. I am aware that this isn't the the first time on Broadway that a show transfered from a limited run to an open ended run.

I am also wondering if the costs of the move will also hurt the show in the long run. In other words, will the show be able to make back the money it cost to move and set up next door?

Seriously? I mean, I love it and all, but it's been playing at around 60% or less for a while.

The Music Box is a lot smaller than the Imperial. If the numbers stay the same, they should remain just fine.

And also, very soon, they'll be bolstered by a Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony Awards.

They'll have no trouble filling the Music Box for awhile.

I think they will have already recouped by the time they move the show. So the only new costs would be the actual move itself. And I'm pretty sure they could make that work. Remember 60% in the Imperial will be much higher 80% or higher in the music box. Plus this show has a slew of awards coming its way. I think it will have long life for a play. Much liked Doubt did when it transfered.

"August" is a relatively cheap show to produce. Stationary unit set (albeit a big one) that requires no movement + a cast where they're all probably working for scale or slightly above (the exceptions are Amy Morton and Sally Murphy, who have a number of Broadway credits to leverage towards a higher salary. (Of course, Morton will probably get a boost once she wins the Tony.)

It's a smart move to move the show, especially to a smaller house. 60% at the Imperial is about 95% at the Music Box.

interesting you mention this, as it was a question I asked myself when I heard it was transferring. the fact that it's a MUCH smaller house certainly helps, and though I doubt the awards can keep it going for a year, i could see this transferring to an even smaller theatre, with perhaps a smaller set and becoming one of those shows which runs forever due to the smallness of the theatre.

I predict 243 performances, it will announce its closing, get a boost at the BO and extend for another two weeks but close a week earlier due to an unseen illness in the house staff which will make it impossible to hand out programs and see them to their proper seats.

PEACE.

I think that the awards it does have coming its way could help out the show. specially if it is playing in a smaller theatre like the music box.

Don't count the awards until the nominations are announced and the awards are given.
Saying it will win the Pulitzer and it winning are two different things. Most people thought Take Me Out was going to get the award; it didn't. Rabbit Hole winning was unexpected. I think it was a good choice. August: Osage County reminds me of too many other plays that are better.

SueleenGay and tazbar, you guys are TERRIBLE at guessing! People of average intelligence would obviously guess around 245 performances until August closes. I mean, come on, it's not hard to guess the correct number of performances.
