Shows have closed before when major players were replaced. Choosing replacement cast members can be very tricky and risky.
I've noticed a trend in the recent "spectacle" shows, like Wicked, Chitty and anything Disney... they don't cast big stars in the leading roles to begin with. (Working, reputable actors, yes, but not big stars.) I think this is to avoid the big let-down when they leave. Shows run on the merit of the show, rather than on a "name" performer.
