My sister was just cast as Erzulie in Once On This Island. She is very excited but was wondering if anyone on this board could help her with the character?? This is her 12th show ever so she is experienced. please give your advice on how to portray this "goddess of love." thankyou

Posted: 12/20/04 at 5:08pmerzulie is the softy of the gods... obviously since she's the goddess of love. she stands up for ti moune against papa ge, so she has to be soft but still strong. not sure what else to say, but i hope that gives you a general idea... i'm sure many others can help out with a better description!

As Zepka said, Erzulie is the softest of all the Gods. It will be important for your sister to find a way of portraying this while still making her strong enough to be a Goddess. Perhaps Erzulie's most powerful moment is during "Promises" when she stands up and fights against Papa Ge while they are both trying to get Ti Moune to behave the way they hope she will. All of Erzulie's previous actions should lead up to this climactic moment.
Erzluie is also sort of in "control" of Ti Moune's actions. It is her idea, afterall, to test the strength of love versus the power of death. Asaka and Agwe both facilitate certain aspects of Ti Moune's journey, but it is Erzulie who ultimately guides Ti Moune's heart.
