I think it would be possible to make something more intriguing out of the ABBA songs even if it were similar to the current concept. This is only a half serious suggestion which i realize have many problems.

I would make Sophie a Cuban and thereby make good use of the songs Chiquitita, Fernando (Change the river mentioned in the song) and Hasta Manana. The action would take place in the late seventies i.e. ABBA:s heyday. The main character was born during the Castro revolution and that's why her mother and the potential father or fathers got separated. This potential father or fathers was/were from New York and lives there now. So she leaves her mother temporarily and flees to New York in order to find her dad. There she finds her dad and also the love of her life. She might find out that the encounter between her mother and father was not very romantic and took place in a brothel. When Fidel Castro dies Cuba becomes a democracy and the main character returns back with her husband to live on the island.

An alternative ending would be that her real biological father was revealed in the end as Fidel himself.

If one wanted to make it less political one could of course move the action to Mexico. One thing that Mamma Mia lacks is a strong love story so in this version there would be one and involving the main character.

Send me all the hate mail you want, but one thing's for sure:

In my opinion I could NEVER do a better ABBA jukebox musical better than MAMMA MIA did. What better way is there to tell a story? I can't write stuff like that! It's too hard for me to figure out what goes where, and worst of all, you gotta CHANGE the lyrics a couple of times. I could never do that. I've seen it three times, and I know. Kudos to everybody involved. I could never be better than them.

This thread cracks me up!

We should just replace the songs in Wicked with the ones in Mamma Mia.
