I join you in wanting Hugh to be offered the role of Jean Valjean in the film version -- he has the physicality, the legit voice, and the acting chops for the role of Valjean!
Re the show in SF, someone posted on ATC about a week or so ago that this might be a tryout --

That was directed by George C. Wolfe and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall. His opening number for the 2005 TONYS which he hosted, called "Never Gonna Dance", was part of that one-man show.
