Apparently some think Phantom of the Opera will be gathering Oscar nominations - how about Hugh sing one of the songs if it's nominated for that?
>Hugh Jackman's decision to take The Boy From Oz to Broadway may have cost him his first Oscar nomination.

Huh? Sing them when? You'd think Gerard Butler would perform the songs if they were done at the Oscars.
"If" this would happen to take place, it would be almost unheard of not to have those in the cast nominated for the award to perform. What an insult to Butler & company if Hugh or anyone else were asked to perform without giving Butler the first opportunity. Geez!

Just read about this on another site:
October issue of INTERVIEW (Emmy Rossum is on the cover)includes an article on her and one on Patrick Wilson accompanied by 2 full-page pictures.
Guess it's time for the Phantom of the Opera media blitz to begin.

Apparently it is a "special issue" devoted to 10 "Up and Comers" and Patrick's article is near the back.
Two full page photos and a column-length blurb!
An Up and Comer to watch. How coooool! After the POTO film there are gonna be more Patrick "groupies" than ever! :o)
Beacon1: A Patrick fan, herself...not so much in the Kathy Bates/"Annie" in "Misery" sorta way...but in a benevolently aware/OCD kinda way... LOL LOL LOL! :o)

Yeah...definitely give the movie cast the opportunity to sing the nominated songs at the Oscars. I don't know how Hugh Jackman would fit in, since he doesn't have any affiliation with the movie or the stage production. Honestly, it would be kind of weird and less meaningful. Plus, IF the movie and its cast is that well-received to receives Oscar nods, then the Gerry, Emmy, and/or Patrick should show off their talents!

P.S.- It's funny because the topic line says "Hugh" and "Phantom"...I automatically thought of Hugh PANARO in the role of the Phantom. I'm horrible! Ha ha!

What an irony --
If this happens, it looks like roles in movie musicals that Hugh has turned down get Oscar nods. He turned down the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago ( Richard Gere won a nomination) and likewise the role of the Phantom ( if the buzz is correct, it may also earn Gerard Butler the nod)...I wonder who will be the next lucky one who will inherit a role he may have to turn down - LOL.
I don't think ALL I ASK OF YOU can be sung as a nominated song for the OSCARS as this was an original song for a Broadway production and not for the movie version. I remember that ALWebber and Tim Rice had to compose a new song ( You Must Love Me) for Evita to get an Oscar-winning song. Also, isn't it that only nominated songs get to be performed in the Oscars?
I think Hugh's much-deserved TONY is well cherished by him. I'm sure that his Oscar nomination time will come.
I never heard that ALW was talking to Hugh about doing the Phantom. It was suggested by fans for months. But as someone said the "Boy from Oz" was already in the works.
Also, there is a new song for the movie version of Phantom. That is the only song that cna be nominated that I know of. I think they say it is now only in the credits. It was supposed to be in the movie, but I believe that scene was cut from the movie and they put the song in the credits.

Carolyn
I wonder if Phantom will sweep the Oscars to make up for them giving Evita the shaft or not?
I just want to hear a clip of Gerard singing. Is that too much to ask?

spider...
Apparently it is. Guess we all have to wait for the soundtrack to be released in November.

Carolyn, I think ALW was hoping that Jackman would delay The Boy From Oz again, since he'd already done so once for the sake of a movie deal. (BFO was originally supposed to premier in spring 2003.)
This hasn't to do with the Oscars, but I think Hugh would make a great Phantom.
Hi Plum,
The filming of Phantom started in Sept. 2003 and Hugh was already signed for BFO. Also, I think GB was signed way before Spring of 2003, if I remember correctly.
I know Hugh pushed BFO back due to Vanhelsing, but I think he had already started filming that movie. When he was doing promos for Vanhelsing he was talking about BFO.
As I said I never heard Hugh's name mentioned except by fans.
From all I heard JS wanted GB not ALW, until ALW heard him sing. So I do not think Hugh was ever in the running.
I can't remember all that was going on back then.
Yours,
Carolyn

Joel Schumacher himself confirms that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Hugh had several conversations about the Phantom role. I also remember reading in a Jackman interview that he was contacted about the Phantom role but he was no longer available because of the OZ commitment. Also, it would not be inconceivable for Andrew Lloyd Webber to have had these conversations with Hugh because of Hugh's previous work with the Australian production of the Webber musical SUNSET BOULEVARD.
It doesn't seem as if this was simply wishful thinking on the part of fans. Of course, it is all academic now.

I saw an interview that Hugh did over on the IMDB quite a while ago in which Hugh said that he had been approached to play the Phantom, but he had to turn it down because of the obligation to do Boy from Oz.
I agree with Jo -- Hugh's Academy Award time will come...
