"I think one of the best examples is the OLB of Into The Woods. There just can be no other Red Riding Hood than Danielle Ferland, no other Jack than Ben Wright, and no one but Bernadette will do as the witch. Joanna Gleason and Chip Zien cannot be replaced as the Baker and his Wife. Right down the line. I am so glad I saw this cast with all present and accounted for. Perhaps they even made the show a little better than it is. Well, no, that's impossible, isn't it?"

I agree about RRH, Baker's Wife and Baker, but I think Bernadette can be replaced. At least, she was the person I missed least in the revival.

I've seen at least a dozen Henry Higgins, but none could hold a candle to Rex Harrison.

I feel the same way about Bernadette in Into the Woods as I do about her in Sunday in the Park with George... While the revival was an amazing production, Dot just really wasn't Dot without Bernadette. Not to say that Jenna Russell isn't great in her own right, of course, but her almost cockney accent really didn't do it for me. I kinda felt the same way about Daniel Evans (not Mandy Patinkin) as George, as well.

I think you have to enter a show realizing that it is LIVE theatre, and the best part of live theatre is that the show can be interpreted all sorts of ways. When I was younger, I really struggled with that.

I have come to realize that we have a natural bias against the second person we see in a beloved role, but that doesn't mean they aren't good in it. Being aware of that has helped me to really appreciate a variety of performances.
