Hey guys, been busy with work and haven't been able to browse the boards in a while. I'll be heading into the city tomorrow. I haven't seen a show in months, so this will be a must when I am in the city.
I am trying to decide among the following shows:
Hair How to Succeed Anything Goes The Addams Family
Currently, Anything Goes tops my list (I'm a huge Sutton fan and love old-fashioned musicals), but I really am not looking to pay almost $150 for a ticket (or $100 for a rear mezz seat). I figured I could use HipTix at a later date for this, but I am not sure I'll make it into the city anytime else this year.
How to Succeed doesn't really have anything good available for Saturday night.
I'll have an opportunity to see Addams Family next year on tour. The only reason I have it on my list is because it is something I'm semi-interested in and it's do-able price-wise.
I have seen Hair before and loved it, and it is also do-able price-wise; however, I want to see something I haven't seen before.
I don't know what time I'll be in the city or what I would be doing beforehand, so TKTS may be out of the question (I'd rather buy my ticket in advace); however, I would take advantage of student/general rush, but it isn't a must - I'm willing to buy the discounted ticket rates using codes, as long as it is a reasonable price (under $100 preferably).
I've seen: Chicago, Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages, Phantom, Lion King, Mary Poppins, so not looking to see those again.
Not really interested in: Memphis, Priscilla, Sister Act.
I'm willing to consider Spider-Man (but way too pricey and not as much desire to see it) or Book of Mormon (no ticket availability).
I haven't been following the general theatre scene lately, so I would appreciate any help!

Anything Goes is one of the only shows i would pay that money to see. it is an incredible show worth every penny. Addams Family is ok not really worth anymore then the TKTS booth. i would highly highly recommend Follies, it is simply breathtaking and it should be at the Booth as well. How to Succeed was a very fun show and far surpassed my expectations. but if you want to see classic Broadway at its best go see Anything Goes, if you wanna see a Legendary show with a Legendary cast go see Follies. i hope this helps abit and i hope you have a great time in the city.
It's a shame you're not interested in PRISCILLA. It was a CLOSE second of my favorite shows I saw in May behind only the tied for first BOOK OF MORMON and THE NORMAL HEART. PRISCILLA is fun and left a long lasting impression on me and if i went back to the city right now would be tops on my list of shows to revisit, just for the shear dane party fun of it all.
Anything Goes. Especially if you are a Sutton Foster fan. I absolutely loved it. Even though you aren't too interested in Priscilla, I would still consider it. If it came between that and Addams Family, I would go with Priscilla. You can get $52 balcony seats at the box office the day of the show, and since the balcony is never full you can usually move to a different spot on the balcony for a better view. I went into Priscilla not expecting much, but I was surprised to end up absolutely loving every second of it.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
FOLLIES....there is a discount code, but it will be on TKTS right up until curtain - although it also seems likely you could get $35 student rush close until curtain too. I think the show and cast are in another league than anything else on Broadway at the moment. But I thought How to Succeed and Anything Goes were also very very enjoyable...the ticket availability and price will be better/cheaper for FOLLIES so it seems like a win-win-win to choose FOLLIES though.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Reconsider Memphis (moving and high octane great show), Priscilla (fun and exciting performances by a talented cast)and Sister Act (laugh out loud funny great characters and improves on the film with a really fine score LOVED it)... You will be very surprised and entertained by all three. Loved them all and would go again... How to succeed is wonderful( Daniel is incredibly charming cast is top notch Tammy Blanchard worth full price , well directed) Anything Goes was good but did not meet my expectations (seemed forced and there was a cockiness as if to say yeah we are a great show which it is not. Sutton was okay but has been better). Loved Catch Me if You Can too ( Leo and Aaron are incredible the score soars and the show is much better than said to be and was frankly cheated. a big surprise and very entertaining). There is ome great work that is going unnoticed in many shows. LOVED Addams family too and hear the new cast is really good and the show is rejuvenated...Any of the shows I mentioned will make your trip in very entertaining and memorable. Reconsider all that does not interest you. YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID!
Hey guys, thanks! I ended up seeing Hair but hope to be back in the city soon and will definitely consider some of the suggestions. The trip was last minute, so next time I'll plan better.
