You were heartbroken? Not one character in the entire show gained my interest, much less empathy or pity. I just think it's very shoddy...while beautiful to look at, there's just not much there. It's very elegant, beautifully disguised mediocrity.

Oh, Munk, I feel the same about so many other things, your current fave Charity included. We both obviously just disagree on this one.

Charity is in no way a "personal fave" of mine. I don't really care for the show. I didn't like many of the cast members. Don't love the production. I just adore Applegate. That hardly reflects your feelings on PIAZZA.

Ah. Correction duly noted. But it certainly reflects our feelings of the leading ladies. I've seen quite a bit of footage of Applegate. Likeable, but hardly impressive beyond the "she's doing it on a healing foot" variety.
And the show left you cold. It didn't leave me cold. I found it incredibly moving, just not from the point of view of the two love interests.
And I hope I've not given the impression that this is the best show ever. It's certainly not. I will defend my opinion that Margaret Johnson is the best-written and realized role in a musical this year and in quite some time. And again, Victoria Clark is giving a remarkable turn without a cherry picker to lift her high into the air or daily commentary on a healing foot injury.

Cherry picker? I never once applauded Menzel's mediocre performance in WICKED.

The reason I like Applegate has nothing to do with the fact that she hurt her ankle, I very much assure you of that.

Best written role? If it's so well written, why do I (and some others) fail to even understand her purpose in the show? I'm not saying you're wrong, because obviously I'm in the minority on this one - but I just fail to see the brilliance in any aspect of the show.

How about this - you take me to see it again and we'll see how I feel about it.

I just felt very removed from the whole experience.

I do very much want to see it again, but since you can only get one student ticket for each account, I don't know how I'm going to do that any time soon.

And I wasn't putting words in your mouth Re: injuries or cherry pickers. That's MY OWN opinion.

And I'll still stand by my opinion of Margaret Johnson. Disclaimer: I don't know a single show that, no matter how "universally" loved, isn't either misunderstood or just outright disliked by nearly as many.
I mean, most critics call the ultimate book musical to be Gypsy (in terms of how well it's written) and how many people not only don't like that show but don't find it actor-proof (Bernadette, anyone?)?

I see where you're coming from...but I think CAROLINE is a better example. What you're using to descrive Clark's role is how I would descrive Tonya's role. I thought her portrayal (and the writing) was just brilliant in every sense of the word.

And since we're on the topic of GYPSY, I think the book (and Bernie) were and ARE brilliant. I think it's the best book of a musical ever written.

oy. My original post got deleted somehow.
Finally we agree on something, Munk (Gypsy's book). It's not my favorite show, but it certainly represents what can result when everything clicks in a musical and is virtually fault-free.

Sorry, this is what I really wanted to say
I also agree that Caroline is a WONDERFULLY-written role. I just have problems with her character's openness to the audience. She remains so hidden from us until Lot's Wife and then comes wailing out, only to go right back into her shell.
That said, I also think Tonya Pinkins gave a star-making performance and was robbed in a way I don't think I could ever say of another person in my lifetime.

Now I remember Mistress and Auggie, forse avete cambiato le icon e non vi riconoscevo più!!

Well, I'm waiting for the cd of "Light In The Piazza" "La Luce Nella Piazza" (I think wuold be traslate)...After I'll write my opinion
