I decided to go see "Hairspray" tonight since it's closing in January and Harvey will be returning, so I would imagine tickets will become slightly harder to get. Anyways, the show was just sort of "blah." Wasn't horrible, but it just felt ... bland? I don't think it's a good sign when I found myself watching the ensemble more than the leads. The sets just seemed so boring and unimaginative - just not what I expected, I guess. At the end of the show they all came out to bow - as per usual - but one person stood up and was clapping. The man resembled Tom Cruise so much, and he was holding a little girl who resembled Suri. However, it just seemed weird that nobody was making a big hoopla over Tom Cruise being there, but maybe that's a good thing? Anyone else there tonight and notice Tom Cruise, or am I imagining this?
Yes, Tom Cruise was there.
Wouldn't be surprised if it was him. I was at a performance a few years ago that Bruce Springsteen attended with his kids, and there was no hooplah in the theatre.

I went to South Pacific Friday night, and during the intermission I saw Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson in the lobby. No one was making a big deal of him being there.

No offense to Bruce Springsteen, but he really is a Z-list celebrity nowadays, and do people who still remember who he is even know what he looks like anymore?

Yes, Foster, you ****ing idiot.
Thanks, sock-puppet-of-the-week.
Seriously, Bruce Springsteen a Z-list celebrity? You really need to start curbing your willful ignorance before you blurt it out. I'm no diehard, but his concerts always sell out, he's still one of the most profitable/popular musical artists in America, and most people familiar with other facets of the Arts besides JUST theatre know who he is and what he looks like.
Granted, his blue-collar, adult, largely heterosexual fanbase may not include you (or me, for that matter), but for them, he's as huge a name as, say, Liza Minelli or Kristin Chenoweth might be for you.

I agree he's a celeb, but he's not a tabloid star like Tom Cruise - which is why I expected a media frenzy, but alas none, so I figured it was just me making it up. But thanks! I guess I was right...weird. I wish I had ventured over to him during intermission now.
It looks like Tom and Katie are enjoying New York!

Springsteen isn't really Z-list, but that's beside the point.
I see what you're saying, on the whole - Bruce Springsteen doesn't have a celebrity 'face' these days, i.e. is way less likely to be recognized by the general public than Tom Cruise who is a major celebrity.
That doesn't make him a Z-List celebrity at all, he's a legend, just not a 'face' of today.
Sorry- am I the only one who finds this behavior (if it went down as described) NOT 'cute'?
Wide-eyed Suri, munching on M&M's and clutching her blanket, stood up in her seat with excitement for much of the show despite dad's gentle coaxing to sit down.
Wearing a darling little dress and sporting her fresh-cut bangs, she even clapped along with a few songs.
Suri is Tom Cruise's Broadway baby

Well, I didn't notice her, but I was also day dreaming, ha.
I'll chime in - since when is Springsteen on the Z-list? Yes, people remember who he is.
I saw Ana Ortiz from Ugly Betty, yesterday at All My Sons.
Springsteen a "z" list performer? You really need to get out more. There are celebrities that will be A list eternally. Bruce is one of them.

does anyone else find it completely ludicrous that a two year old is a big hairspray fan? or that she became a fan when the movie came out... when she was ONE years old?
i pity the theatregoers stuck sitting in her vicinity. i do not imagine she was quiet and attentive for the 2+ hour show.
