Is anyone else saddened that this amazing show is closing???? esp to make room for Whoopie? I mean I love whoopie and all but this is one of the most moving and artistic shows on broadway!!!!
If you haven't seen it please go see it you will not regret it!
It is a brilliant play. I loved it.
I went twice on Broadway.
Don't get me started. All my favorite shows have either closed or will close.
yeah I agree with you Corine there's no room on broadway left for the truly artistic shows. You now have to go to offbroadway to find them. They are just not making the money to support a large broadway house anymore
Jefferson Mays is going to do the tour
That's great for him! I just couldnt picture anyone else getting through all 40 or so characters on stage with such grace and ease!

Another show I won't be able to see because of time and money constraints. I wish many of these shows would just hold on through November. Updated On: 8/25/04 at 02:10 PM
I agree and would love for it to hold out...buit it is being forced out to make room for whoopie
why cant she just go to the circle in the square to do her B.S. or move I am My own wife it's not a big show. You can move it on like one truck.
When i heard this news this morning i was shocked and appaled that the best broadway straight play since proof is closing.

This is going on tour - I just got my tickets for the Curran theatre in San Francisco. I agree, no one else could pull off this amazing performance. Thanks New York for sharing!

Maybe PBS will be smart (or BRAVO will get back to its theater routes) and record the show. It is a wonderful show.
I don't think Bravo will be going going back to what it originally was anytime soon.
I've known Jefferson Mays was scheduled to perform I Am My Own Wife at the Goodman in Chicago in January for several months now, so it does not surprise me that it is closing. The show has not had strong box office numbers and most usually, when the star of a one-man show leaves, they are seldom replaced.
I was amazed at this show. Jefferson Mays was incredible and I encourage anyone who hasnt seen it to see it before it closes or when it comes to a city near you. Completely deserving of the Tonys.
i was hoping to see it, but it's closing?
Jefferson Mays deserved and rightfully won that Tony Award

"why cant she just go to the circle in the square to do her B.S." - Qfan
Just a little perspective - this presentation was considered by many to be a master class in the art of acting. In fact, it was after seeing this (in a privately arranged presentation) that Mr. Spielberg offered her the lead role in The Color Purple. I'm not sure that this qualifies as "B.S."
I, for one, am thrilled that some people in the rest of the country will get to see Mr. May's important work in this piece. And also think NYC is lucky to have a second look at what is considered a legendary piece of acting by Ms. Goldberg.

I agree. Don't disparage Ms. Goldberg in this case- it's not her fault the show is closing, and it looks like her show will have artistic merit.
But I hate hate hate it that I Am My Own Wife is closing. I just have the golden touch, don't I? A week after I see the show, it puts up its closing notice.
