I'm a huge Lenya/Weill/Brecht freak.
Is it possible that you're a little overly familiar or biased to be a fair judge? As someone who had no perspective on how well she did as a mimic, I found the performance pretty stunning.
The show was not good. That's a whole other story, though.

You may get what she is doing, but most critics and audiences would disagree with you, that's all.
Murphy's performance was a masterclass in song and dance, her delivery of each song was so on-spot. No, she was not Lenya personified, nor was she trying to be. In my eyes she simply gave an impeccable performance that is only comparable to her work on PASSION and FOLLIES (her Phyllis was out of this world). Her fight with Weill when she finds out he has another woman in L.A was chilling, and her immense pain during the scene with John Scherer after Weill's death was almost uncomfortable to watch. Of course, the cathartic moment with the make-up was just one of the most beautiful moments I've seen on stage.
Point is, you may think it didn't work, but it's hard to take that opinion seriously when the evidence to the contrary is so strong.
