I've always wondered...

For those of you who have performed in Broadway shows, know people that have performed in Broadway shows, etc.: Is it considered bad etiquette to audition for one show when you're currently performing in another? Is there a stigma attached with this? How does this work, I've always been curious.

I'm not asociated with anything Broadway, but I would think "no." I mean if your contract is going to be up in a couple months, you might as well get your next job lined up. No harm in that, right?

I don't think so, particularly if it's for a better or bigger part. Actors do it all the time, and have done so forever.

BUT... you have to honor your contract in full, obviously. As long as you aren't breaking any laws (and can give proper notice)... it happens probably more than you realize.

If you are in " In The Light" I would consider auditioning for something else now self preservation

The critics now probably think ( after hearing Brooks music ) that Wildhorn ain't half bad. Ha Ha

Interesting. So you aren't "shunned" for doing this. Do actors ever attempt to get out of their contract to move on to a new show?

(Side Note: best12bars-- I happened to read a post of yours last week and apparently your mother and I share the same birthday. Tell her happy belated birthday for me :))

Jeff---That's really sweet! A happy belated birthday to you, as well.

In answer to your question, if an actor is lucky and talented enough to "show hop" CONSTANTLY, then yeah, I suppose a producer might wonder why they've been jumping ship so often. It might affect them hiring the actor. Just like with any job out there. Loyalty and longevity count. But I don't think the opportunity to "show hop" arises all THAT much.

I know several actors who have left Broadway jobs because they got other ones, but the idea of that happening very often and repeatedly to ANYONE is unlikely.

I'm pretty sure Matt Morrison read for APPIAN WAY while he was still in PIAZZA.

Elaine Stritch was in Pal Joey at the same time that she was standing-by for Merman in Call Me Madam. She auditioned, got cast, and then thought: "I can't do these 2 jobs at the same time", but she did.
