Ok, So i just got back the seeing The Producers on Tour. I am not really sure what I thought. It was not one of my favorite shows. For some reason, the older crows seemed to like it more. It was humorous at times, but I was not impressed with the music. Any thoughts? Updated On: 5/25/04 at 11:39 PM
im 17 and i loved it. i think it is one of the best and the most hillarius show ive ever seen
I have to agree with you. While the show had it's moments I do think it is pretty overrated. I didn't laugh nearly as hard as I did at things like Urinetown or Bat Boy.
interesting. I guess i just like shows with better music. If you're looking for a comedy, however, thats your show.
Did you see it with Gary Beach? He makes the show.
But I do not agree Mel Brooks is hilarious. I love the Producers.
I also love Gary.
I do admit to being an old crow.
Guess I am now the Broadway Black Crow instead of Widow.

It's definitely more of an "old-style" musical comedy with some modernized elements. Neither the humor or the music is typical of what we're seeing from the more contemporary musical comedies, like Urinetown, Bat Boy, Reefer Madness, Avenue Q. I absolutely laughed my ass off when I saw the original cast, but was much less impressed with the material when performed by the tour cast. I would agree that it's overrated but still think it's a wonderful show filling a necessary niche. Now that $5000 New Year's performance was just insulting...

I've never had a rational objective response to this show because the original "Producers" movie was/is one of my all-time favorites. I had it memorized line-for-line by the time I was a teenager and Zero Motel and Gene Wilder were/are gods to me. When I saw Nathan and Matthew do such a fantastic job with the material and how well Brooks, Meehan and Stroman opened up and adapted the original 80 minute concept, I was hooked. I'm not sure what I would think of it, if my first encounter with it was the musical -- I realize it's VERY broad, very silly and very "old school" vaudeville/Yiddish theatre, so if you love it, you love it, but if you don't get it, I totally understand -- there are no reference points for it in modern contemporary comedy on stage, television, or in film (which is why the lead roles are so difficult to cast -- there aren't many expert pracitioners in the art of "schtick" left around these days .... most of them are dead). I think the music is tuneful and serviceable, but not nearly up to the level of the book most of the time. I hope you enjoyed it at least on the humor level, though.
Older crowd ok.
Well I don't consider myself old but compared to 17 I am old.

Corine, I am confused by your statement, "I do not agree Mel Brooks is hilarious."
Namonette-
I was saying that I loved Mel's humor in the Producers.
I have only seen the original cast and only once.
Hope that cleared it up.

Corine, as I am in my 30s, I would also qualify as an old crow, I suppose. Perhaps we should have an old crows meeting at the old crows home. Anyone, else? It'll be BYOG .(Bring Your Own Geritol). Updated On: 5/26/04 at 12:36 AM
The Broadway Black Crow meeting is now in session.![]()
PS- You are only as old as you feel and I feel 17.

You don't even want to know what I would give to have a Crystal Pepsi right now. What was that Van Halen song they used in the commercial??

"Right Now."
Namoito, you're my hero.
Wow, hard to believe how much has changed since the last millenium. Way back then, people just weren't ready for the Crystal Pepsi generation. Now we've got Vanilla Coke, Blue Pepsi, that godawful Sprite Remix. And old man river...
