and I am wondering which shows/hotels you would recommend? I am also on a budget (I am a kindergarten teacher)and I need to keep expenses fairly low. Can anyone give me some ideas?

Ideally, what would you like to pay for a hotel? How many days are you planning to be here?
I would love to get in 3 shows (2 night shows and one matinee) over the course of a two night stay.
I would also like to be near Brodway so that things are in walking distance.
How much are you willing to spend on a hotel?

The Edison Hotel is a classic art-deco hotel in the middle of the theatre district with a great coffee shop and a piano bar, but the rooms are tiny, and the views are mostly of side streets and alleyways. Rooms normally go for $159 plus tax and $35 a day to park.
The nearby Milford Plaza and Best Western President are both similarly priced.
Check Hotels.com for rates on other places, sometimes they run specials on the above, or if you can get The Millenium Broadway for under $200, go for it, very nice and conveniant, with high rise views.
See Little Women!! oh and Beauty and the Beast. i have to makret for Peter Flynn you see

i would suggest doing a search on travelocity.com or some other booking site. you can usually get pretty good rates that way.
The Milford Plaza has rooms for $99 a night... it's right in Times square on the corner of 45th st. and 8th ave. It's hard to find a better deal. Look into this, and make your reservations ahead of time.
Maybe I'm just a student at heart, but I've always loved staying in hostels in New York. I recommend Times Square Bed & Room -- it's at 40th St. and 8th Ave. It's a small, clean, spacious hostel. I think it's $40/night, which is a bit pricier than other hostels, but much nicer and still waaay below what you'd pay for a hotel. If you're interested, PM me and I'll look up the website for you.
I stayed at Milford Plaza twice this year. If you want a private room (not a hostel) and to be able to walk to all the theaters (right next door to Avenue Q), I recommend this one. I got my plane reservation + hotel as a package from travelocity.com. Of course, book early and maybe get travel insurance just in case...

Try the West Side or Vanderbilt YMCA. Its very International. The West Side Y is a block from Central park & Lincoln Center. The Vanderbilt is over by the UN but has a shuttle bus to the west side. I think it runs about 79$. go to the YMCA website to check it out.
As for shows, I don't know what you've seen but I'd recommend Avenue Q, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spamalot, Wicked, Light in the Piazza (thru 6/12/05). I have a feeling Steel Magnolias is going to be pretty special/funny. some of these are hot shows even before they've opened. I would buy tickets and reserve your room for the summer pretty quickly. Have a great time!
