Posted: 9/12/03 at 3:51pmThere are some great performances noted on this thread. I would have loved to have seen the original production of STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE with Jessica Tandy, Marlon Brando, Karl Malden and Kim Hunter. I attended the memorial service for Tennesse Williams at the Shubert Theater. Jessica Tandy got up, "youthened" before our eyes and did Blanche's big monologue. Without a microphone, you could hear every word in the balcony and it was maybe the most amazing few minutes I've ever seen on stage. I would like to have Laurette Taylor in GLASS MENAGERIE as well.

Posted: 9/12/03 at 4:06pmNamo, it did not at all live up to the hype, but I'm glad I got the tee-shirt. And the cast was not too friendly at the stage door.

I find it a bit unsettling that I have in fact seen almost everything listed, that is a bit "older." Not everything, but almost. I would have to reach back further and wish I had seen:
Red, Hot and Blue with Ethel Merman, Bob Hope and Jimmy Durante
Funny Girl with Streisand
Take Me Along with Robert Morse and Jackie Gleason
Hamlet with Richard Burton
Coco and perhaps The Philadephia Story with Hepburn
the original cast of Plaza Suite, Maureen Stapleton and George C. Scott

As I read through this thread, I realized how very fortunate I have been. My theater-going started in 1963 and I saw so many performances that are now considered "classics". Still, there are some that I didn't see, either because they were before my time or because I just didn't get to them:
Laurette Taylor in GLASS MENAGERIE
Tandy/Brando in STREETCAR
Barbara BelGeddes in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (did the wholesome-looking BelGeddes REALLY make an effective Maggie the Cat?)
Richard Burton's HAMLET (I have an audio recording of it, but the real thing was certainly more effective!)
Mary Martin in LEAVE IT TO ME (everyone raves about that striptease she did) I saw Mary in DOLLY and in a play called DO YOU TURN SOMERSAULTS?
Elizabeth Seal in IRMA LA DOUCE. I've seen the show and been in a production of it and it never seems to work. Seal must have been special to pull that show together.
Florence Henderson in FANNY. (I love the score)
Ethel Merman in GYPSY. My first go-round with the show was Angela Lansbury's magnificent portrayal. I did see Merman's DOLLY, though. Twice, in fact.
Albert Finny in LUTHER.

Good list, DP.
I'm surprised you left out YouKnowWho in THE VAMP (the very idea of her as a silent screen heroine is brilliant)!
