as did many in our row and section," a woman said in an online message board. "The staging was lifeless and the projections of fire and destruction boring."
I hope "Lestat" can be pulled from the fire & brought in successfully. It would be a real boon to the Bway Industry & definitely 1 for the history books. Am I correct in that I don't remember a show in recent years being in such danger & pulling it off?

"The Vampire Chronicles" books tell the stories of the vampires Louis and Lestat whose wanderings from France to New Orleans eventually lead to rock 'n' roll stardom.
Um... yeah. I haven't read the books, but the musical doesn't have any rock 'n' roll stardom, unless they plan on adding that (which I guess might be less silly than the SF ending, with Enkil and Akasha and a happy chorus).
Here is what we took away," Maday said. "The play tried to do a lot. It tried to take a lot of themes and a lot of plots from the book and infuse a lot of intellectual ideas in the storytelling. We realized there was too much confusion."
Confusion? Yes. Intellectual ideas? Maybe not so much. Maybe they will be adding some of those.
Hopefully they can turn this around, and of course they are going to put a good face on it, but...

I really feel that there is a potential for a real miracle here. The show I had in mind when writing my inital post was KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. I remember it being completely eviscerated by a critic (whom I can't remember off the top of my head), when the whole point of it being done at the college WITHOUT critics was to have a sort of Utopia where musicals could be developed with whatever time & care was deemed "necessary" by the creative team. This was not to be, blast it.
KOTSW was fated to be done in Canada first. I don't remember what the word was on it up there initially, but I certainly remember what happened here before it got to Broadway.

I can't imagine the chronicles being set to music or the connection to Elton John. I always found the overall theme of the books to be much darker than anything Elton has ever produced. The songs I have listened to on the website seemed almost like a parody.

Is there a possibility that EJ will be canned? While I'm sure Rice has little or no final say (obviously) in the final decision would she lobby for a new composer to save the show? If she did, since she probably doesn't have ultimate say, would her status as the cult creator affect the decision?
Would getting a new composer solve the problem?

Posted: 2/3/06 at 8:04pmWith the short amount of time left to fix the show, I can't imagine they'd get rid of John. Plus Anne Rice's bio had some incomprehensible gushing about "Broadway Giants" in it, so at least whenever she wrote it, she must have been pleased with the choice of composer.

Posted: 2/3/06 at 8:17pmyes! Bring in an additional composer. Elton John can't pull it off by himself. He still doesn't even really seem invested or like he cares too much about it. He should be in New York straight through, not just pop over there every now and then.

The problem with _Mambo Kings_ was the Director, that's why it never opened. From what I heard the director left most of the directing up to the choreographer, who eventually got fed up with him and _Mambo Kings_ fell apart and died. It was mostly backstage drama that killed that show.
Although a chunk of the songs in MKs weren't that great and most of the characters got what was coming to them, people were generally happy after that show. The dancing was amazing and acting was good and the sets were nice. It was good to see a show with a large Latino cast. It brought Latinos who hadn't been to the theatre before to see it, and that's always good. But I digress...
