IF I FORGET ENDING

Did you see IF I FORGET by Steven Levenson? If so, what is your take on the ending? Thanks.

IF I FORGET ENDING

My take is this:

The play is essentially about the erasure of Jewish identity. Michael's belief is that white nationalists and conservatives have held the memory Holocaust against the Jews as a threat for decades, and the only way to allow for progress (particularly in regards to Israel and Palestine) is to forget the single most horrific act in modern history and reforge the Jewish identity without using fear as the foundation. The other siblings and the father are worried that if this happens (with subtext included by way of the Dad's shop being sold), their identity will be erased, and everything their race has done to stay alive since the days of Pharaoh will have been for nothing.

The last scene, as the nephew reads from the Torah, renews Michael's hope that even though the children are brought up secularly, they will find a new way to continue the legacy of Judaism.

It's an existential, personal show that rocked me the first time I read it, and I was amazed it didn't win the Pulitzer that year (Cost of Living won, I believe).

I'm directing a production of the play and don't agree with your view of the play. By the way, no one reads from the Torah.

Sorry if I got that wrong, It's been a while since I've read the script/seen the BroadwayHD production. I know the nephew reads some kind of text, and the other characters join in. Do they specify exactly what they read?

The nephew reads nothing. His uncle tells him what his daughter said on the phone. The rest of the family, except for the nephews step-father recite lines from the call.

That's my bad, I must have misremembered that. What's your take on the play?

IF I FORGET ENDING

I definitely saw it, because I remember thinking my Dad would be fascinated by it. But for the life of me I can’t remember the ending. I just remember really enjoying the show.
