IN MY LIFE#0

Saw the ad in the times on sunday. I haven't heard anything about this musical, which is unusual because someone on this board usually has "insider" info for all of us. Anyone know anything about this musical?

Joe Brooks has written the book, music and lyrics and will be directing. In other words it's a vanity project.

"In My Life, according to production notes, concerns "a musician with Tourette's syndrome and a journalist with obsessive compulsive disorder [who] meet cute at a grocery store — with some help from above — and begin an unlikely romance that proves that life's greatest affliction is the one they share — true love."

Sounds like a candidate for the next edition of "Not Since Carrie."

Written and directed by Joe Brooks who wrote and directed the film You Light Up My Life among others and won a Best Song Oscar, the show ought to examine the fate of The Mambo Kings which also had a first time writer-lyricist-director.

Im pretty optimistic about this one...I think it just might be the Little Show that could. "Light In the Piazzas" lighting designer & costume designer - both Tony Award winners, will be lighting and costuming this production as well.

What's Brooks been doing the last 20 years? IMDB lists no credits for him since 1985. He also has no listing on IBDB.

Who gave him the money for this (and let him direct it himself)? And there's apparently not going to be an out of town tryout either. A neophyte director/book writer opening cold on Broadway? This is going to be a chapter in the big Broadway book of "How NOT to produce a Broadway show."

Unless..IT'S GOOD! Speculating is fun, but condedming before it's even started is pretty hard on something none of us really knows anything about.

I agree completely, Margo.
This IS vanity project.
And Brooks is a little, shall we say, "eccentric."? Anyway, the script is actually pretty cute and has some nice moments. But, expect lots of schmaltz and self-aggrandizement from the music. It will also NOT have a major star to headline it, which is a serious deathknell for any vanity project. I give it a month and a half at the Music Box. Tops.

Word. Word, indeed.

In my life, there are so many questions and answers... nope. Too easy.

Well in a previous thread someone said it wasn't doing an out of town tryout because it was coming from Off-B'way and most shows that come from off-b'way don't do out of town tryouts. Anyone know when they'll put up the marquee or when this show starts previews? I'm actually really excited about this musical. I hope its good, it sounds pretty good.

It NEVER played off-Broadway. It had two AEA workshops -- that's it. It's NEVER been in front of an audience before or been fully-staged.

NOT a good idea.

Whenever I see the title, my first though is that they changed the title of "Lennon" (since "In My Life" was one of his more memorable compositions.) I can't help but wonder if maybe that's intentionally misleading...
