Hey everyone. UGHHHH!!! I'm so mad because my computer recently crashed. I lost everything but reinstalled ITunes. The library, where i download CD's to, was blank because the old program was gone. I added a new CD, plugged my IPod in, and because the library ONLY had the new CD in it, it wiped out ALL of the 800 songs I had on the IPod. In the future, how can I prevent this from happening? Thanks so much.

Save stuff you dont already have on CD to a cd (stuff you download from Itunes).
Whatever is on your computer is what's going to be sent to your computer...so if everything is erased, it will erase it from your iPod. I guess you know that now, but didn't you know that before? It does say it.

When you plus your IPOD into the computer, go the iPOD setting, and change it to MANUAL,not AUTOMATIC. This way, when you plug it in to your comp, you manually put the track on, by dropping. As opposed to it automatically updating your iPOD for you.

There is also software out there that you can download - and it will let you download the songs from your Ipod back on to your computer should it ever crash. A friend's computer crashed, and he lost all his songs on his hard drive - but they were on his Ipod. Now he's uploaded the songs from his Ipod back onto his comp.....

Hmm, that's something to look into. I've been terrified that is going to happen to me. Plus I'm paranoid because last summer my car was broken in to and my WHOLE musical theatre collection was stolen. Grrrrr.

Yeah make sure you change it to manuel.
If you downloaded CDs off of iTunes under an account name, you can log back into your account and access your purchased songs to put in your new Library-- This only works around six (I believe), though, because iTunes wants to prevent people from logging on to friends'/others' computers and sharing songs. But you should be able to access your account from your computer, because it is saved on the Internet and did not crash.

it's not the manual that's the problem, it's the software that you can't go from ipod to computer. does becky know where/how to find that software?
WhatDoINeedWithLove's link look good. I was wondering about becky's suggestion though. Also, if I select manual, and I just re-installed like 400 songs and they are all in one folder under "library", do i have to click and drag EVERY SINGLE FILE into the IPod? Can you select Manual/auto without haveing the IPod plugged in?

doing manual is stupid. and it has nothing to do with your problem. it's the download from ipod to computer, which apple won't help you with.
The only thing manual will help me with is next time, god forbid, if it happens again, the IPod won't automatically start erasing all of my files when I plug it in..
Anyway, thanks for the help anyone. I'm just so frustrated and confused that Apple has the technology to make a machine that can store music and COLORED PHOTOS, yet they cannot figure out how to take a small file from the IPod and put it BACK onto the computer. Huh!?!!?
see ya

Oh nonono.
They do that on purpose. They don't want people using iPods to share music from computer to computer. You could share thru ripping CDs, but using iPods to trasfer music would be too easy. You're not supposed to be able to move iPod music -> computer, and that has nothing to do with the competence of Apple products.

Yeah, you do have to drag music.
But you can highlight a bunch through use of either the shift or control key.. one of the two.
I had the same problem and used the Ipod music liberator. It had a few quirks in it, but I got the majority of my collection back on my ipod. It ran around $20, but considering the amount of time it took me to digitize my collection, it was well worth it.
