So I've been thinking a lot lately about this concert, and thought I'd post my thoughts on here!
It was June 1st, and Idina Menzel was kicking off her tour in Vancouver; with a nearly sold out crowd, who were inanely energized for the show.
Some highlights were Idina starting the show off with over the rainbow, which melted Into the Wizard and I. Let me say what an honor it was to hear her sing these songs, someone who I never thought id see perform live. It was the perfect beginning to a perfect evening!
She went on to explain why she was barefoot. And despite a few sound problems in her monitors, the show went glitch free.
She explained she would be doing some new stuff, which we were all stoked about.
A note, Idina is insanely funny, she had the audience in stitches. I was surprised by this, she's a bundle of fire!
Before "Don't Rain on my Parade" she explained how she performed it for Babs, her idol, and mentioned the Kennedy Center honors, and then mumbled something about it we knew what that was, as we're in Canada.. Then she felt bad for making it sound like we are from the "boondocks" and asked us not to hate her. It was quite funny.
It really felt like an evening with an old friend. So innocent, sweet, funny, and intimate.
More highlights included her amazing Rent segment, where she sang "take me or leave me" with 4 lucky audience members, her "no day but today" was worthy of tears.
One of the best moments was when she took out her ear pieces, put the mic away, and sang "For Good" all alone. She filled the barn like theatre, and the audience gasped. She also cutely "forgot" the lyrics, which the audience lovingly helped her out with.
There were no songs from her album. Just broadway tunes and some contemporary stuff.
The band was simply awesome (all 20 or so of them)
Her "Defying Gravity" was great! Sang the broadway version, not her recorded version.
It was a few days ago, so I'm sure I am forgetting some of the exciting stuff, but one amazing thing was her singing a new song by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt. We were allegedly the first audience to hear this sung live. I believe it is from a new show we have all heard about.... It was pretty fantastic!!
If she is coming to your area, see her concert! She is a great performer, so humble, and insanely funny.
