I always thought The Hours would make a great chamber musical. The idea of Sondheim scoring it never even crossed my mind. I'd pick that.

I could also see American Beauty and, don't shoot me, Election.

The Hours was already made into a musical...as featured on "Kath & Kim"...the Aussie version.

I had heard a rumor years ago that Warren Beatty was planning on bringing DICK TRACY to Broadway and asked Sondheim to write a few more songs for the show. Beatty was planning on directing it. This would be really cool, if true. Apparently both Sondheim and Beatty have denied this. Would a LAST OF SHEILA musical work?

Romantico: I, too, heard that DICK TRACY rumor. Plus, there's all those absolutely FANTASTIC songs Steve wrote for the abandoned SINGING OUT LOUD movie musical project. I could definitely see "Sand", "Dawn", "Water Under The Bridge" and the title song worked into a DICK TRACY musical if Steve isn't up to writing entirely new songs.

God, I love SINGING OUT LOUD. It's the holy grail of Sondheim. I STILL haven't been able to find a recording of the title song. I've heard it once and that was certainly not enough!

Thank the gods that BK recorded the songs that he did!

My voice teacher has no evidence to support this but his ear, but he was wondering- was "What Can You Lose" a trunk song before its placement in Tracy? He says it sounds more akin to "Merrily" and out of place with the rest of the score of the musical.

It's funny you mention that, darquegk, because to me it sounds VERY reminiscent of the songs Sondheim wrote for SINGING OUT LOUD which he was writing during the same period (early 90s). I'd venture to say that "What Can You Lose?" is musically most similar to "Water Under The Bridge" out of all of Sondheim's songs, and "Sooner or Later" very reminiscent of "Sand". Also, harmonically, "Dawn" and (if I remember correctly the title song) from SINGING OUT LOUD is very much like "Live Alone And Like It" and "More".

It was during roughly this same period that Steve wrote "Growing Up" and "Like It Was" (I think) for the La Jolla/Lapine MERRILY re-do, so there is some weight to the MERRILY/DICK TRACY discussion, as well.

Okay this is somewhat off topic, but... Does Sondheim have any intentions of doing another musical? Not a revival of his old work or anything like Sondheim on Sondheim. But a legitimate new musical. Anyone know? You're all ridiculously well-informed.

Back on topic...
I'd love to see that new movie Nine as a musical.

I think he does have 'some intentions', I can't recall completely but there was articles where he said he was looking at a few things with Weidman and Lapine, and in the Tony speech for his recent award there was some hint that he hadn't 'finished'. But he talks about how he is under pressure for meeting expectations, and that when you get older he becomes physically/emotionally.creatively tired easier and things.

Kind of paraphrasing and all what I remember, but I think he definitely is open to 'doing another musical'.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

What Can You Lose was directly inspired by a line of dialogue in the original shooting script. I believe the number was written later than the others and filmed in the latter end of filming very much like King Of New York in Newsies.

I dont remember if this was in commentary on the DVD or in an interview, but it was definitely written "for" the project. Looking back, I think the DVD was bare bones... so it must have been in an interview.

I have said for years we are LONG overdue for a Special Edition DICK TRACY DVD and BLU-RAY. A Sondheim segment special feature is an absolute must!

I suppose it could have been inspired by a shooting script line, but that gets copmlicated...

The line "What can you lose?" is delivered as a threat to Patinkin's character from the film's villain. When Patinkin sings the song later as a tender love ballad, the reprise of that line seems almost coincidental. However, in the film's novelization, written after the film was finished, "What can you lose?" is a catchphrase for the Patinkin character.

The Swedish science fiction comedy "Kenny Begins", which is a prequel to the excellent TV series "Kenny Starfighter" about two intergalactic misfits would be an unusual but perfect fit for a Sondheim score in a musical stage adaptation. Why? Because every other composer currently writing Broadway scores would provide a futuristic score in the present that would quickly become dated but, if inspired by the material, Sondheim would provide a futuristic score that would be ahead of its time in the present and likely to remain so in the future.
