Hey all, quick question in if/then which one is the actual story and which is the What/if? If that makes sense
The stories of Beth/Liz take place simultaneously throughout the course of the show. There is not one that is the "actual" story and one that is the "what if". Both stories concur at the same time and the show switches between the two.
Both are true. Don't think of it as one is what happened. Think of it as parallel universes in which one choice changed the course of each in different ways.
i would hope it would be Liz because a woman named Elizabeth going by Beth would be tragic
She starts as Elizabeth and then takes two paths. One as Liz and one as Beth - simultaneously.
The way that i interpret the show, the Beth timeline is the one that really happened, with the Liz one being the What if? scenario. This interpretation is because at the opening of the show, Elizabeth is talking on the phone, saying something about "i remember when you came back from your third tour...what if i hadn't been in the park that day?" and then they flash back to the alternative timelines. The story in which Josh comes back from a third tour is the Beth timeline.

My interpretation was that Elizabeth, in the park, faces a sudden moment of indecision (What If?). The narrative splits from that moment on, showing her the two lives she could have. They are both hypothetical. At the end, (What If Reprise) she is back in the park, after seeing the two different paths she could go down, and has to make the choice. It is left vague which she chooses.
