re: Ignorance towards the Rent movie

how ridiculous, especially considering changes are a GAY hairdresser is fondling her hair, a GAY designer probably had something to do with designing her shoes, clothes, etc.......GAY people have served her in restaurants.......
These homophobes are just downright stupid!
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956

I'm pretty surprised that people are shocked by this. I guess it DOES depend on where you live in the country, but Rent has always had that, "Eeeew. It's a musical about GAY PEOPLE?!!" stigma attached to it. Making it a mainstream film won't do anything to change that fact, sadly. I still think the film will do well overall... but I never expected it to be a smash hit. It's still considered too taboo by too large a cross-section of the population.

re: Ignorance towards the Rent movie

I manage a store and one of my male (straight)assistant managers has no clue that Angel is a drag queen. Today I caught him speaking to another sales associate saying "the guy from Law and Order's girl is hot!" He meant Wilson! He's going to see it tomorrow. I haven't told him Angel is a guy. Tee hee!
