In Trousers

Have you ever listened to a cast album and felt mad at yourself that you didn't discover it sooner? I feel this way about "In Trousers" which I got about a month ago, and constantly listen to. It is amazing, very cerebral, and full of perfect song after perfect song. Definitely my new fav in the Marvin Trilogy. The cast (Zien, Fraser, Testa) are all perfect, and the show has a feel that I don't think I have ever felt from a musical before. It gets in your brain, and then goes to your heart, and then back again. Wow.

I think that "I Am Wearing A Hat (Marvin Takes A Wife)" is one of Finn's best songs.

I agree Mef. And with Testa singing it, it is even more perfect. I love "My High School Sweetheart" too, well all the songs, but I find myself listening to that one over and over. Also, Starobin's orchestrations are perfeciton.

This show needs another New York production. I would say that it is due for a revival.

re: In Trousers

They just did an incredible production of In Trousers in Chicago as part of Porchlight Theatre's Finn Fest.

The show was fantastic. From what I understand, they did a new version of the show (that makes more sense than the CD does). It included songs that are on the CD and some songs I had never heard of before. I was glad they did "I'm Breaking Down" as part of In Trousers, instead of Falsettos. It made more sense in In Trousers.

LOVE IN TROUSERS!!!

Didn't he rewrite a lot of it for the revival in 85 or so? I think he switched a lot of the music around and added a few things.

I think it needs a revival too. I was just thinking that the show is such, that the original cast could repeat their roles so many years later.

re: In Trousers

Yeah the Chicago Performances made some changes, but the show still has some flaws. There's a thread on here I started about Finn's appearance at the fest; he's asked to explain why it's called "In Trousers" and what that song means and he has to say he doesn't know.

That said, I love the show. I remember discovering "March of the Falsettos" back in college, and hunting down the "In Trousers" LP and how much I loved them both. I'm suprised they aren't performed moe often; Small cast, unit set, built in audience.

And "I am wearing a hat" is just a gorgeous song. Here in Chicago, Miss Goldberg was fantastic! She had a real Effie-Dreamgirls-belter quality and she blew everyone away.

When the day comes, God forbid, Stephen Sondheim will be able to pass the mantel to his natural successor.

There is really nobody in Bill Finn's league in the next generation.

Set Those Sails is my favorite track from that CD. Great song.

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe there is a thread on this. I LOVE this show so much. "Set Those Sails" gives me chills everytime. I had one of my best friends sing it at my birthday party this year! "In Trousers" is such a great show and I could watch and listen to it over and over again. It's Finn at his best!!

Thanks for this thread... it made my day. : )

re: In Trousers

I was going to start a "Wicked is the coolest" thread, but thought I'd go with "In Trousers" instead.

re: In Trousers

"Set those sails" brought the house down in the recent Chicago production....what a great song!

re: In Trousers

Because of this thread, I re-found my cast recording.

Oh my...

I had listened to Falsettos lots and kind of forgot this one! Never again! This is firmly back on the front row!

It must be time for the trilogy to return and stake its claim as one of the great musical works.

re: In Trousers

OMG, I was so happy to see this thread that I just had to register so that I could post, too. I absolutely love the OCR of IN TROUSERS and Testa's performance especially... I love "Set Those Sails," "I Am Wearing a Hat," and she is totally hilarious on "The Rape of Miss Goldberg by Marvin" -- I wish that this one was on its own track, so that I could just skip to it and listen whenever I wanted. I also love Fraser's "Love Me for What I Am," it's heart-breaking.

I sang "How Marvin Eats His Breakfast" and "A Breakfast Over Sugar" in a recent revue/showcase here in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Believe it or not, the audience response was GREAT!
