Many people have said things about Audra being believeable in 110.
I did some research and came across a good deal of scholarship about western settlements being entirely integrated until governmental sanctions followed them west and set segregation in place, apparently this was fairly common.
Let's face it, most of what the average lay person knows about history is little more than elementary to high school level, which often leaves out a lot of details. (I never learned that Columbus killed thousands of people and completely changed a culture forever). In any event, before jumping to conclusions about what is or isn't possible in the past, I would consider doing the research first.

I actually haven't heard anyone comment about it.
I saw it today and honestly never thought about it. Her father in the show is white. That would be the only area I could see someone confused about...
But historically, I've never heard anyone question it.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 11:22pmI think this show was brilliantly cast to support Audra as Lizzie. Instead of having just her in an otherwise all-white family, or having the entire show be cast black, they just mixed it up. Two of the four members of her family are black, and the white brother has a black girlfriend. Eventually, you don't notice.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 11:26pmThe color-blind casting didn't bother me in the least. It worked very, very well and added a slight subtext of racism in the town's treatment of "old maid" Lizzie.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 11:28pmI didn't see/feel any racism at all, Yankee - to me it felt more like race wasn't an issue at all - that they were all the same.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 11:33pmYankeefan, your interpretation is totally valid though. Different people get different things from a piece. That's why no show is the same if it's performed in a different space. The overall impact of the show depends on the performers, the space as well as the ground (the audience).

Posted: 4/28/07 at 11:33pmSomething was mentioned about it on the Maria Von Trap can/can't be black thread. I'm not quite sure why this wasn't just posted there. We really don't need the same argument going on in two places at once.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 11:34pmMaria was a real person - Lizzie is fictional. I think that's very different. Besides, I wouldn't know to go to that thread to discuss this show.

There is nothing in the text to suggest that Lizzie can only be white.
Race has nothing to do with 110 IN THE SHADE at all...therefore it's a non-issue and color blind casting is fine.
THE SOUND OF MUSIC gets fuzzy.
Neddy: I thought it was spectacular.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 11:38pmAnd here I thought this thread would be about all those canary diamonds Audra wears in the show. Colored bling all the way, y'all.

Posted: 4/28/07 at 11:45pmRath, my post was not an attack on you. The original posters post isn't solely about Mrs. McDonald and 110 In The Shade. It's defending color blind casting. The original poster is very much aware that this same argument is going on in that thread. The poster in the thread I mentioned is the only one I know of who had a complaint, which means the original post should have just been placed there. I hope I don't sound too much like a bitch, just remember I <3 You.
