So, last week my roomate's parents saw the national tour of 'In the Heights.' She told me today that they walked out before Act II because they weren't expecting there to be rapping, and they couldn't understand what was going on, so they figured there wsas no use staying.
I couldn't believe this! I saw it on Broadway and while I'm not a Spanish speaker by any means, I never had a problem following the show.
What are your thoughts? Is this a common occurrence?
Culture clash!
SO not a fan of rap myself, but we found a great deal to love about IN THE HEIGHTS. Whether as sung or rapped, the lyrics were really topnotch in our book and that's all that mattered to us for most of the first act. And the energy was off the charts great. By Act II the skinniness of the plot became more and more a problem-- the weight of the show seemed to vanish into thin air by the end. But with another stronger story I'd go to a new Lin-Manuel Miranda show in a heartbeat.

The use of rap in the show was a very mild mental stumbling block for me, but I'm not sure that I've ever seen rap used in MT in a way that didn't come off feeling at least a little silly. I got over that very quickly, though, accepting the choice, and soon after, just like cjg, the more significant problem became the thinness of the story, especially juxtaposed with the largeness of the production. I left the production feeling unenthusiastic and a little awkward.
