Hey everyone.

Been enjoying my cast recording of ITH and realized something from the show struck me as odd.

When Abuela Claudia wins the $96,000, she keeps a third, gives a third to Usnavi and gives a third to Sonny. Right?

Well, why did she not give some to Nina? I mean, if Abuela kept "every scrap of paper" from Nina as she grew up and went to college, why wouldn't she think to help Nina? It's obvious that the girl is going off to an expensive school, so wouldn't it make the most sense to do that?

Thoughts?

Spoilers, obviously. After Abuela's death, Usnavi offers to give Nina some of the money. Nina says that before she died, Abuela told her she wanted to give her some money to help pay her tuition. Nina refuses, because, as she tells Usnavi, she has her parents, and thus couldn't take Abuela's money.

Usnavi offers it to Nina after Claudia dies but she refuses.

Also, Abuela CLaudia shares a house with Sonny and Usnavi.

Nina has two parents.

Claudia is basically a mother to Usnavi and Sonny, so it makes sense.

Oh, and Usnavi and Sonny (during summers) have, presumably, been supporting Claudia for the past few years with the store while she hasn't been working, so she might feel a sense of debt.
