I think that the story of my first Broadway show does fall under the category of the thread. As a matter of fact, I am not sure why I didn't think of this story earlier rather then telling the one I did about my stroke of good fortune at Phantom.

The first show I saw on Broadway was Big. Despite any and all flaws people may see in it they are ones that I don't see. I love the show, think that it's perfect and that is most likely because it was a show that did change my life. If it wasn't for that show (and maybe living in NY) I wouldn't be into theatre at all. In any event, my family and I went to the Met art museum one day with my parents telling me that we might go see a Broadway show that night. A possibility that excited me to no end. We left the museum and headed towards TKTS where we got tickets for Big in the last row of the Shubert and had dinner at the now closed All Star Cafe. Despite being in the last row of the theatre I was in awe of that which I was seeing on that stage and I was mesmerized. It wasn't planned that we would be going to the theatre at all. It was very spur of the moment, but it was a spur of the moment decision that changed my life for the better, to say the least.

A few months later when it closed it went on tour. I remember it being a halloween and having my dad tell me that he got me tickets to see the tour in Hartford at the Bushnell theatre there. He knew that Big was both my first and favorite and I was very happy back then that he thought of me and was willing to do the drive from Long Island to Hartford just for this show. It was an amazing night that I also will never forget. We drove to Hartford and when the show was over drove back home. I sat in the car this very antsy, fidgety boy on the way there. But, sat in the car a very happy and content one on the ride back home.

I live in New York, so I don't really have any good New York stories, but my family and I tend to go out of our way for theater.

We used to go to Maine on vacation for a week every summer. We hadn't gone in years, but we decided to go again a couple years ago, on the same boat we used to cruise on regularly. Well, it turned out, we'd be driving up the coast of Maine during the time THE FULL MONTY was playing at the Ogunquit Playhouse with Sally Struthers and Hunter Foster. I mentioned it to my mom and she loved the idea, so on our way to Rockland for a family vacation, we pulled over in Ogunquit to see a show, then continued north and got on a boat that night.

Also, once in college I found out that an actress I loved was in a show in L.A. I happened to have money at that point in my life, so I booked a flight across the country, landed in L.A. Saturday morning, saw the show Saturday night, flew back to New York Sunday night. The worst part? The actress was out of the show that night.

My friends made fun of me for flying to California just for a show, but hey, I'm the one who was enjoying the warm sun in Pasadena in November while they were all freezing and studying.

Oh, and I was also determined to see ENDGAME when it played at BAM last spring, but the only day I could possibly go was the day I was leaving for a ten-day trip to Israel. So I brought my suitcase to the theater, bought a rush ticket, hung out with my luggage for a couple hours, saw the show, and then rushed out to Newark to meet my group and catch my flight. That was kind of a whirlwind.

You know...I realized that I do have an interesting story. Well, a kind of interesting story.

Someone gave my friend $1,000 for us to go to Florida to see A Tale of Two Cities during its out of town run. That covered our flight, hotel, rental car, and meals. To this day all I know about the person is that her name is Kate. That was deal - my friend was not allowed to tell me who had given her the money.

I never flew anywhere just to see a show, but I think last week counts in this sense of going at the last minute.

Last Tuesday, I was called out of work for the next day. So, i thought it would be fun to go to a Wednesday Matinee. However, I made no plans, because I assumed getting tickets would be very simple. I practically missed the train I needed to get on to even make a matinee. Then, ended up waiting for a subway, which wasted more time. After that, I tried getting rush tickets to Shrek, which did not work out. Chicago did not have anything either. And of course, I did the stupid thing of passing on a standing room ticket for that. I went to the TKTS booth to see what was up, and to my luck, there was practically nothing available. I did buy a ticket for Chicago there, and in the end, it was not really worth it for the price I paid. So, now I know if I am offered standing room, to just take it. It would have been cheaper, and I probably would have gotten a better view. And, as I was going home, I found out that a tornado hit my area.

This definitely was not as interesting as the 18 hour bus ride to and from Grand Rapids, Michigan from northeast Pennsylvania for band though.
