Can someone break it down for me what the difference is between a regular reading of a show compared to one that is for industry only?
Does an industry reading mean the show is closer to being produced?

A regular reading is usually the first step, which helps the author get an idea of what works and what doesn't based on where the "regular audience" laughs, cries, etc. But an industry reading usually means the piece has been revised and the author is ready to let potential producers see the work in the hopes that they'll back it (i.e. put money into producing it professionally).
