Posted: 12/31/06 at 9:38amThe article is actually from an independent paper in Orange County (CA). The writing in this paper tends to be more casual than what you'd probably see in the New York Times...I know its still kind of crappy writing, but....whatever.

I want to commit unmentionable deeds to the writer of that article. To say that musicals suck but he likes them anyway is not exactly going to win over musical fans or non-fans.
Btw, if you want to comment on it: http://www.ocweekly.com/index.php?option=com_philaform&form_id=1&Itemid=203

Posted: 12/31/06 at 8:17pmMusicals are very misunderstood. LOL That is an understatement...People do not realize that musicals are supposed to be edgy and that is exactly what the writer of the article did not get. Musicals ofcourse are edgy in their own way. Some have curse words or say other shocking things but others serve as commentary or satire. There are also plenty of feel good musicals, but they usually come out of an era that might not want any more "truth" and might just want a peppy tune. Musicals when they first come out are very current and are designed for audiences of their day...whether it be depressed society or an angry society at war. Oklahoma had many pop hits and many would agree spring awakening fits in with the pop charts even if it isnt at the top of it. A show like rent came shortly after the first aids scare in the 80s...musicals take a while to develop lol. I think most people would appreciate musicals today if they saw current shows and could relate to them which they probably would! I do think they would appreciate old ones too if they truly gave them a chance...many people appreciate the beatles even though they are not current or shocking anymore. Many might call the beatles square but there are many who appreciate and see their influence in todays music.

If I wasn't a musical fan, I don't think that would've convinced me to become one. Was it supposed to?
Either way, the writing, as previously stated, "sucked" and lost my attention.
