Before anyone says anything about posts - I searched a lot, but couldn't find answers. So there.
I'm applying for Roundabout, Second Stage, Public Theater, New Victory, and some other internships this summer for mostly marketing or development.
I was wondering about anyone's experiences with them, and also: which ones do interviews, and how important are they? I live in Virginia (but just got intern housing for the summer), and can't go up for interviews a whole lot, as I'm only a junior in high school.
So basically, I'm wondering if you think any would take a high school junior with a lot of web design/marketing experience and some theatre experience.
Thanks for your help :).
I don't have experience with these companies, but my hunch is that while it'll be hard for a high school junior to get a position, it doesn't hurt to try. Just don't put all your eggs in this basket. There's so much competition amongst college students to get these jobs, and since they've got higher education and maybe more specialized skills, they're at an advantage. You're also going to have a bit of a problem if you can't go up for in-person interviews. I know that Roundabout has been interviewing people this week, so you'll have to figure out how to get to NY ASAP!
But don't let me discourage you - one of my biggest regrets from high school and the beginning of college was not interning enough in a field that I'm interested in. It's going to be difficult in your position right now, but if you send out a lot of CVs (and keep in mind that smaller theatres will be looking for people too - don't limit yourself to the big guns), you may get your shot!
The only place I know of that REQUIRES on-site interviews is Playwrights Horizons. I've applied just recently for MTC, Roundabout, Second Stage and NYTW. MTC said they had something like 200+ applications last year for 11 spots. Most people I know that do these internships are college students. Good luck with your applications!
Just bumping this up once :). If anyone else has any help, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Having interned at several places, and knowing a ton of theatre professionals, 95% of places don't really want to hire high school students as interns, mostly just because there are so many more qualified college students (many who NEED an internship to graduate etc), especially during the summer.
I was just curious. . . what exactly is "Intern housing" and how do you go about getting it? I'm thinking of interning over the summer in either new york or Washington DC (I am from the virginia area as well). I just wanted know what you did. THANKS! and good luck finding an internship this summer!
The New Vic definitely does interviews. Also, the New Vic is one of the few intern/apprentice programs that delegate certain apprenticeships for high school students. I know at least during some semesters, they'll say they only want a high school student for a certain apprenticeship. Does that help any?
Ugh. The application for my first choice is due soon and I'm pet-ri-fied. I have a bunch to get in within the next few weeks, though.
Internships rock and look great in writting :). My summer is devoted to internships.
