Here is a terrific interview with our newest MAME, where she discusses how the production came to be, her surprise at major critics being invited just after three previews, and how tremendous the audience reaction is.
Interview with Christine Baranski
Lovely interview - But WHY, WHY, WHY is her wig so awful in the show? Why can't she wear her own hair like Lansbury and every other woman who did it on Broadway?

Baranski's wig actually looks just fine in the show ... it bounces and moves (it looked like real hair from the 8th row) and flatters her, and is expecially appropriate during the 20s scenes. Maybe it wouldn't be such a great styles a decade later, but, hey, this is musical comedy.
I think one of the other reasons almost everyone is wigged nowadays is that it anchors their microphones.
And as for the other actresses who did it on Broadway, I can guarantee you that Ann Miller wore a wig.

How could she have played Mame in high school but not known that she had a singing voice?
