Am I reading the NY Drama Critics Circle Award right? I guess Intimate Apparel beat out I Am My Own Wife and Anna in the Tropics for best play of the year.
Was Anna in contention?

No surprise. Intimate Apparel is superior to the other two.
One man shows are poor man's theatre and Anna is mediocre.

You are so gross. "Poor man's theatre?" Could you BE any more classist? Friggin Shakespeare was "poor man's theatre" you elitist moron. There I said it.
I didn't get to see Anna, but Intimate Apparel was so moving. May be this will get more folks in to this show.
"One man shows are poor man's theatre"
I think that wins a nomination for most ignorant post. Now I have a more clear understanding of why your posts seem so snobby and moronic. It's your rather closed-minded approach to theatre.

I understand (I hope) what 'poor man's theatre' is meant to describe. One actor, one costume, one set=low overhead.
I found I Am My Own Wife to be superior theatre. I also think that were Intimate Apparel a Broadway entry, the 2004 Best Play Tony Award would be a real horse race. This is one satisfying play.
Perhaps this prize will convince some producer to transfer it to a nice empty house like the Kerr. Then next year it would be Tony eligible and maybe the Pulitzer. It opened very close to the Pulitzer cut-off date this season, and I am not sure.
Viola Davis is giving a must-see performance.
Anna was eligible for this year's Critic's Circle prize.
I wonder what other plays also received votes.
Also note that no foreign play nor musical was honored.

"I AM MY OWN WIFE" is just brilliant theater.
Viola is giving a TREMENDOUS performance in "INTIMATE".....she's awesome....she broke my heart
I found "ANNA" interesting, but it is not in the league with the other two plays

Talk about snobbery, MisterMatt! You're certainly entitled to your opinions but instead of getting your knickers in a twist and jumping to incorrect conclusions, you could have asked me what I meant by the phrase "poor man's theatre" if you were unfamiliar with the expression. I would have then explained that not only is it a metaphor for the low economical overhead required for the one-person show as WOSQ suggested but also a comment on the limited and compromised dramaturgy of the form. This is particularly true of I AM MY OWN WIFE when, during the course of the play, the author/actor of the piece throws up his hands and claims he has no idea how to dramatize certain aspects of the story. What a cop-out! Poor man's theatre, indeed.
