I have an idea:
Lets put on a BROADWAY show starring ONLY people who we on this board have heard of..
and approve of...
It will be so much fun because we can cast the show..mount it for millions and after all of us have seen the show and discussed it.....ad nauseum...
we can..
Stand Back and watch the closing notice be put up because...
NO ONE ELSE GOES TO SEE IT!
and I think to hasten the closing notice, we should prevent ALL TOURISTS from coming to Broadway at all...as they know nothing anyway...
Oh, and the show should be free as selling tickets will make someone money and we would'nt want that..
Oh, and the actors can work - gratis- no charge - as they really don't need to earn a living to pay the rent or fix a root canal....
OY VEY!

I understand why non singers and dancers (and sometimes actors) are cast in these shows-and money is the answer. Fine, you can't blame them for wanting to stay open and allow performers and crews to make a living, thereby pleasing tourists, etc. It's all very easy to understand. However, let's not pretend that the quality and integrity of the show is intact when a non singer is trying to sing, etc. Of course I can only speak for myself, but I'm always disappointed when this happens. I'd rather the show be presented with the finest talent available for each individual role.
That being said, I guess what I would like is a thing of the past- big names are what brings in the money. (:^(

Posted: 8/4/03 at 5:10pmIt is ok if the show is on broadway and then becomes a movie. But movies that are musicals and were never on Broadway are kind of stupid and I don't think there is any of those or am I wrong?

Disney did an original version of Babes In Toyland starring Annette (the Mouseketteer) and it was never a Broadway show.
Unless you count the totally different operetta version, but I don't think that ever played Broadway.

There are/were some actors and actresses who are/were excellent performing on stage or in the movies -- Julie Andrews, Yul Brynner, Marlon Brando, Vanessa Redgrave, Judi Dench, Liam Neeson, Michael Crawford, etc... then we have the best of both worlds...
Are there more to come -- hopefully, Hugh Jackman will be one... which ones do you think also show promise?

Posted: 8/5/03 at 1:16amOh, Jo. Michael Crawford in the same group as all those very talented people? Honestly, what has MC done on screen that really says STAR QUALITY? Or on stage for that matter? Phantom Schmantom.

Michael Crawford is a good comedian on screen - and it's not just Phantom where he has done some excellent stage work ( there's Barnum as well) -- you may have your own taste, S-Gay, but we don't have to share the same preferences ![]()
Btw, I am not a Michael Crawford fan for that matter - I've just enjoyed watching him do his craft.

Voiceanth are you really trying to tell me that any new Broadway show has to have a big name draw in it or nobody will go? Seriously? You've never heard the expression "the show's the thing"? You can have a hit without a star name, it is possible. Good publicity, good reviews, good word of mouth. All helps. Amour tanked because it got a critical kicking, same with Urban Cowboy. If the reviews had been amazing and the publicity the same, then maybe they would have lasted longer. Without stars.
And your arguments would carry SO much more weight if you got your apostrophes in the right place. It's WOULDN'T, not would'nt.

Jo, Hugh Jackman has more than 'promise'. He has already shown himself to be quite capable on stage and in film. He may be well known as a FILM actor, but most of his career has been spent on the stage playing Curly in Oklahoma!, Gaston, in Beauty and the Beast, appearing in Sunset Boulevard, playing Billy Bigelow in Carousel at carnegie Hall, and numerous other things. If I had to categorize Hugh, I would call him a stage actor with film experience. Like I said, it is just the fact that he has been in several successful films that have given him recognition to the general public.
Check out the RNT cast recording of Oklahoma! and the Australian cast recording of Beauty and the Beast. He is quite the singer.... he has a wonderful baritone.

Stars selling show is hardly a new idea. It goes back to the beginnings of everything. You think Mary Martin got all those parts based sorely on talent? Of course not, her name was a draw. More importantly, her name meant something to people even when the property didn't. It pre-sold the show to a part of the audience. Look, if stars didn't sell tickets producers wouldn't use them. Stars tend to be more expensive and higher maintenance. If a producer could put any unknown in a role and get the same ticket revenue, they'd do it. In fact, look at a show like 'Phantom' where the title meant more than the performers. We haven't seen ANY stunt casting in that show, it wouldn't have mattered. But, in most cases, in order to keep a show running and to get the necessary interest to keep selling tickets 8 times a week, 52 weeks a year, you need to have a name that's going to sell the thing.
The show's the thing? Makes a great slogan. Doesn't mean a thing.

Broadwayguy2,
I can do better than just checking the DVD of OKLAHOMA! and the CD of Beauty and the Beast( which I both own) -- I actually saw Hugh perform as Curly in OKLAHOMA! at the Lyceum theatre ( where the show transfered after the RNT run)in London in 1999 ![]()

But I do think the film career actually honed his acting talent ( I'm talking of movies like Erskineville Kings, Kate and Leopold, Swordfish, and even Paperback Hero - which showed us quite a variety of movie genres for him) and that we will be in for a better treat when he steps on stage for The Boy from Oz - a real triple threat of acting, singing and dancing. I did say "hopefully" more as a formality to his actual stage debut on Broadway in a full-blown show...I hope that he gets the chance to be Sweeney Todd ( which he says is the stage musical where he would like to be involved in a movie version) when they get down to filming it... Eventually, if he comes back to the stage again I would like to see him in a non-musical stage drama.
Btw, I am booked to see him in The Boy from Oz for several dates ![]()
